Elizabeth Hurley Is One Hot She-Devil
By by TAYLOR AICHEL, Staff Writer
While "Bedazzled" is a remake of the popular 1967 film, this updated version adds new meaning to the idea that everything has its price. With someone like Elizabeth Hurley twisting your arm, who could resist selling his soul?

As the movie opens, Elliot Richards (Brendan Fraser) is nothing but a clumsy technical support geek who is hopelessly in love with Allison (Frances O'Connor), his officemate. Drowning in his misery, Elliot asks for help.

What he gets is more than he can handle: a vixen version of Satan whose powers of persuasion are extremely taunting. The Devil (Hurley) tells Elliot that he gets seven wishes, and that every time one of his wishes goes sour, all he has to do is page her with the magic number (666), and she will come right to his rescue. The only catch in the contract is that every time she must fix the situation, the wish count subtracts.

Elliot stumbles across bigger problems along the way. Each time he makes a request, he asks for the superlative form of perfection in a man: smartest man on earth, best athlete, most powerful, the richest man, etc. He finds out, though, that just as each character is fabulous in his own right, the flaws of each are equally blatant and blow any chance of winning Allison, Elliot's ultimate goal. He screws up each scenario so badly that even Lucifer herself feels sorry for the chap.

The on-screen chemistry between Fraser and Hurley brings much laughter and heat to the screen. O'Connor, in a deft performance, provides a solid romantic foil for Fraser. Her style lets the audience know that while she may be overshadowed by two of Hollywood's brightest stars, she should be taken seriously as an actor.

Performances are strong all the way around and complemented by the script, costumes and special effects. "Bedazzled" is a hearty laugh that anyone will enjoy.
