Old 97s take the twang out of country
By Carolyn Johnson, Staff Writer
With a sound that resonates (sometimes a little too closely) to Wilco's brand of alt-country rock, the new album has its spectacular moments. "What I Wouldn't Do", "Designs on You" and "Book of Poems" are all well-crafted songs built on choruses that tell stories about cheating, earnestness and the schism created as people try to keep themselves steady in a world where the only constant element is confusion. As frontman Rhett Miller sings on "What I Wouldn't Do," "I'm in love with you but I kill myself trying to figure out how to do it."
