Barkan '02 makes heads roll
By
Last Saturday, Andrew Barkan '02 presented his senior honors composition recital, "Invitation." "Invitation," an original work in six movements, was inspired by and loosely based upon "Invitation to a Beheading" by Vladimir Nabokov. Barkan's rendering of the Nabokov story consisted of a resplendent combination of saxophones, strings, brass, timpani, other percussion, a soprano soloist and a fifteen person choir (which at one point sang from various positions situated in the audience). Barkan utilized a few other interesting performance tactics including subtle and drastic lighting changes and implementing the soprano soloist as an actual 'character' in the piece.
