The Augusta Savage Gallery will present "Young Artists: Paintings from South Africa," an exhibit of visual art from four South African Communities. Director Ron Howard's skillfully directed but somewhat contrived film, "A Beautiful Mind," Academy Award winner for Best Picture, features Russell Crowe as the schizophrenic mathematician John Forbes Nash, Jr. and Jennifer Connelly as his wife, Alicia.

The Britney Spears vehicle "Crossroads," a road-trip movie featuring the pop star as a teen in search of her biological mother, fails to deliver even the guilty pleasure its cast and premise promise.

In his best film since "Short Cuts," director Robert Altman presents the highly acclaimed "Gosford Park," a witty, fluid parody of a classic Agatha Christie-style murder mystery and English comedy of manners. The film stars la creme de la creme of British film and stage actors. Nominated for seven Academy Awards, winner for Best Original Screenplay.

Susan Buchholz will present "Girls, Science and Interactive Theatre: Investigating the Classroom Alternative," a lecture about girls' educational experience of math and science. The event is sponsored by the Five College Women's Studies Research Center. (Mon., 4:30 p.m., Five College Women's Studies Research Center, Mount Holyoke College.)

STAGE

The Department of Theater and Dance program amherst works will present "Momentary Collison," a comedy written and directed by Aimee Gonzalez '02. (Thurs. through Sat., 8 p.m., Studio 3, Webster Hall.)

TUNES

Kai Eckhardt, Fareed Haque, Alan Hertz and Aaron Levy, who form jazz and jam quartet Garaj Mahal, will engage an audience with a passionate groove and improvisation. (Thurs., 11 p.m., Iron Horse Music Hall, Northampton.)

Violinist Erin Keefe, a native of Northampton and founding member of the Delancey String Quartet, will perform Mozart and Beethoven sonatas. (Fri., 8 p.m., Sweeney Concert Hall, Smith College.)

The Royal Philharmonic Award-winning Brentano String Quartet, featuring violinists Mark Steinberg and Serena Canin, violist Misha Amor, and cellist Nina Maria Lee, will play the rarely performed Schubert octet in F major. (Fri., 8 p.m., Buckley Recital Hall.)

The Bluestockings women's a cappella group will perform "Real Sox," its spring concert. (Sat., 8 p.m., Buckley Recital Hall, $3.)

MISCELLANEOUS

Youth Action International will hold its first information session for students in the Five College area to introduce its mission to end the suffering and abuse of millions of children around the world. The presentation will be lead by child rights activist Kimmie Weeks '05 and YAI cofounder Sarah Godwin '05. (Thurs., 7:30 p.m., Cole Assembly Room.)

Mystery author Daniel Klein will read from his second Elvis Presley mystery, "Blue Suede Clues," an inventive whodunit with the King of rock 'n' roll tracking the murderer of a young starlet. (Tues., 7 p.m., Odyssey Bookshop, South Hadley.)
