On May 3 and 4, Sherng-Lee Huang '02 will present screenings of his thesis film "The Photographer," a short fictional piece. Starring Bandar Shawwaf '02, Diana Buirski '02 and Matt Van Etten '02, "the movie is about what it means to be committed, either to another person or to art, to being an artist, and the risks and rewards that go with that," said Huang. Set on the Amherst campus, predominantly in Johnson Chapel, it tells the story of an engaged couple and their bizarre pseudo-romantic encounter with a wedding photographer.

Huang's endeavors in film and video at Amherst have included his participation in the production of various other film; three others will be shown alongside "The Photographer." Friday's program will include "The Barbecue," an "existentialist kidnapping caper" directed by Brad Tytel '02, and "Knife to Mountain, Fire to Sea," a kung-fu music video choreographed by Huang. "Achhhh!" a comic murder myster featuring an ensemble cast of 30 people, including President Tom Gerety, will replace "Knife to Mountain, Fire to Sea" in Saturday's program.

Huang is eager that people familiar with his previous films see "The Photographer," for he feels "it's a very different type of film." Whereas the others had somewhat campy undertones, "'The Photographer' is definitely more low-key, more serious. More mature in a self-conscious way," said Huang. "Acting-wise it's probably the most fully shaped of all the pieces. It's a different type of acting, more realistic. I hope people enjoy it."
