The personals: questions for Margaret Chute '06
By Emily Cornell du Houx, Arts and Living Editor
So of the Oscar nominees for Best Picture-"Chicago," "The Hours," "Gangs of New York," "The Pianist," and "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers"-which one would you choose?
Definitely "The Lord of The Rings." I've seen it twice.

Legolas or Aragorn?
Defintely Aragorn. He has the whole rugged, scruffy appeal.

What do you think about the political activism on this campus?
I would have thought there would have been more "in your face" stuff. I'm supportive of activism, but I'm not very polically active. It's kind of nice to have that around, for a balance, to educate people.

Do you think civil disobedience is an acceptable form of dissent?
Non-violent action is good, but when it gets into burning flags-that's too excessive. I would have gone to the war protest if I didn't have practice.

Do you think going to war would deter you from traveling?
It wouldn't deter me. My parents are a different issue.

Are you planning on traveling anywhere soon?
I was hoping to go to Africa on a community service trip, but that might be postponed.

What do you think of airplane cuisine?
Hmmm ... the peanuts were good, but they don't have those anymore.

What do you think of the life of flight attendants?
I think that would be very cool, getting to travel around the world, but I don't think that customer service is for me.

Do you have any irrational fears?
I have to admit I still have a fear of the dark-when it's quiet, like outside or alone in a dark room. I have fear of heights. I freak out if anyone touches me when I'm in a high space.

What's the most mysterious building on campus?
The darkroom-seriously, I don't even know where it is.

What do you pick up at a newsstand?
I have to admit-the magazines, just because the pictures are more stimulating. I'm like a five-year old; it's the colors, not the content. If I see a star on the front cover that I recognize, you can't help but be attracted to it.

Do you ever read The Amherst Student?
Sometimes. If it's there ... like in a friend's room or something.

If you weren't at Amherst, where would you be?
I think it would be kind of cool to be doing Peace Corps.

Middle school-fun, forgettable or nightmarish?
I think a mixture of fun and nightmarish. I went to an all-girls' school, so there was definitely the "in group" and the "out group" and all the things that go on with girls, but we still had a lot of fun.

What's the best culinary establishment at the Hampshire Mall food court?
Dairy Queen. Ice cream in general is good.

Even in the winter?
Well, I can't help getting it at the dining hall.

If you could get into the head of a historical figure, who would you pick?
Robert E. Lee; I would want to know what he was thinking-why
