The Personals: questions for Colin Porter '05
By David Scherr, Arts and Living Editor
What's your favorite time of day to be walking across campus?

Early on Saturday mornings in the spring.

What's the best class you've taken here?

That's a really tough question because I've taken a lot of great classes. But Colonial North America with Professor [of History and American Studies] Sweeney was the class that made me decide to be a history major.

Do you look forward to graduating?

I like it on the horizon. I'm sure that in two more years I'll be ready to graduate, but I'm having a good time at Amherst right now.

What do you consider the most exotic locale you've ever been to?

Unfortunately, Puerto Rico's as far away as I've ever traveled-and that was with the swim team.

Do you think marijuana should be legalized?

Yes, it should be legalized and taxed, like alcohol and cigarettes, given that it's no more harmful. The government's "war" against it just seems like a big waste of time and money to me.

What's your favorite type of

chocolate-milk, dark or white?

Any kind from Europe, but otherwise I don't care so long as it has nuts or candy in it.

Michael Jackson-monstrous or

misunderstood?

He's a freak, but he's released a few great songs, albeit mostly from when he was in the Jackson 5.

Is there a type of sibling-older sister, baby brother, etc.-that you wish you'd had?

No. I have three brothers, two older and one younger. Four works out really well as a number of kids because everything from hotdogs to ports on a GameCube are organized in multiples of four.

What's your dream job?

Member of the E Street Band circa 1975.

Have you ever been to Hooters?

Twice, both times in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Very friendly atmosphere, but the wings are terrible.

If you could hand-pick the next U.S. president, who would you pick?

A few weeks ago I would have said John McCain on an independent or a Democratic ticket, but in light of the recent international politics, I'd rather have someone who is less hawk-ish.

Did you/do you have a favorite superhero?

I've never actually owned a comic book, but I thoroughly enjoyed the movie version of "Batman." I used to watch "Spiderman" pretty regularly as well.

Name three of your favorite songs.

"You're a Big Girl Now" by Bob Dylan, "Non Compos Mentis" by Haiku D'Etat and "Little Wing," the Stevie Ray Vaughan cover.

What's your favorite newspaper?

The New York Times, I guess, but I rarely read it.

What's your webpage?

You've got to be kidding. I don't have one.
