the personals: questions for Kate Hamill '03
By Jennifer Wertheimer, Arts and Living Editor
Ever had a celebrity encounter?

Woody Allen lives a block away from me in New York City. I was walking my dog and he suddenly jutted forward, tripping a guy wearing a raincoat and felt hat. The guy fell flat on his face, his hat fell off, and it was Woody Allen.

Are you glad to be graduating?

Yes and no. I mean, I'm definitely tired of writing papers that aren't particularly original or interesting. But at the same time I'm definitely going to miss being a student and I'll definitely miss the social aspects of college. I mean, where else could I live with nine of my favorite people in the world?

Have you ever gambled?

Not officially. I make stupid bets with my brother all the time but that's about it.

What kind of a preschooler were you-sweet, monstrous or somewhere in between?

Monstrous and alien. I lived in Bermuda and I was the only white kid in this enormous school.

Favorite local bar?

Upstairs ABC.

What's your best Spring Weekend memory?

I don't have any.

Over the past four years, has there been a subject or class that you unexpectedly fell in love with?

English. It wasn't my thing in high school, but it ended up being my major. Now I want to do something literary in life.

What subject did you take in high school that you swore you'd never take again?

Physics.

Did you, in fact, take it here?

No.

Where do you plan to live after you graduate?

I'm moving to Europe, probably Spain, next year. But I'll end up in New York City, no doubt.

Do you have any pop culture idols?

Bob Dylan.

Are you satisfied with your Amherst experience?

Definitely. I don't think coming in, from an all girls school, that I expected to have primarily guy friends. I'm thrilled with how things worked out.

Favorite escape from Amherst?

Home, to New York City.

Any siblings?

Yeah, an older brother. He beat the shit out of me when I was little.

Pretend I just gave you a pet frog. What would you name it?

Seymour.

Would you keep it?

No.
