the personals: questions for Byron Bonaparth '06

Any plans for a Halloween costume?

A couple of my friends want to dress up as dictators-like one of us could be Castro, one of us could be Mao or Ho Chi Minh. But we haven't gone to the store yet, so I think it's going to be kind of difficult. I think everybody wanted to be Castro, but I let someone else do that. I was thinking that Mao would be easy because I could slick my hair back like him, but I don't know how easy it would be to find that frock that he always wears.

Your brother is a Williams alumnus. Is there any rivalry?

Yeah, he graduated in 2001. It's hard to say because I think by the time my brother was a senior, he was just so sick of Williams because there's nothing to do there. I think he was aching for the hustle and bustle of some place that was close to somewhere. I give him a lot of you-know-what about going to Williams, but I don't think he cares so much.

Do your parents like Amherst or Williams better?

I think my parents like Amherst better. My mom went to Mount Holyoke, so I think she always has a special place in her heart for Amherst. I don't think my dad really cares. But they probably feel more connected to Amherst because my brother isn't at Williams anymore.

Out of all the possible democratic presidential candidates for 2004, which do you prefer? Do you think he has got a shot against Bush?

I think pretty much at this point it depends on the economy. I think all the candidates are pretty much losers. Although I like "People-Powered Howard" a lot. I saw him speak at Bryant Park in August. It was pretty interesting, the kind of crowd he draws-a lot of stoned-out types. But I like his energy. He probably doesn't have the best chance of beating Bush, but I like his personality. Also, I would like a president from the Northeast, since the last president who was from the Northeast was JFK. It's been a while.

What's your favorite restaurant in town?

Does Antone's count as a restaurant? I live in Porter this year, which is super close to Antone's. If I had enough money I would eat there every day and never get bored. It is the yummiest place on the face of the earth, and I love it to death.

Have you been watching MTV's "Newlyweds"?

You know, I saw a few minutes of it once, and I caught the scene where Jessica Simpson wishes that she had a gun so that if she ever caught Nick cheating on her she could shoot his balls off, and I think that was enough for me. I don't think I'll be coming back to it anytime soon.

What superhero would you want to be and why?

I guess Batman, because he has the cave and he has a butler and the car's pretty cool. I would just get rid of Robin because he's a little flaky. But I'd definitely keep the butler because I would need one with all that money I got.

Did you do anything fun for October break?

I saw the El Greco exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It was interesting. I had an important dermatologist appointment. It was not very fun but it wasn't not fun. And I filled the tires in my car up with air at the gas station. It was the first time I'd ever done that.

What's one thing people would be surprised to know about you?

I'm actually related to the Dreyfus from the Dreyfus affair. He's my mother's mother's distant relative, maybe like a 2nd cousin or something. This might all be a myth, but my grandmother insists that it's true, so I'll take her word for it.
