the personals: questions for Kelly Smith '04
By Justine Chae, Managing Arts and Living Editor
As former editor-in-chief, how does it feel to no longer have to work on The Student?

I can't say it isn't nice to have an extra 35 hours each week, and I've noticed that I receive significantly fewer irate emails. Still, I really do miss that late-night frenzy and being on the frontline of whatever is happening on campus.

What have you been doing with your free time?

I could say, "work on my thesis," but that wouldn't be entirely true. Mostly I've been trying to enjoy being a second-semester senior. Monday is the new Saturday!

Can you talk a little about your thesis?

It's an econ thesis. I'm studying early decision and the strategic choices behind colleges' early-decision policies. Early-decision students tend to be wealthier than their regular-decision counterparts are. I'm particularly interested in how schools use this information and, in the end, how the academic quality and socioeconomic diversity of the student body is affected. The empirical work I've done suggests that as early decision enrollment rates increase, schools spend less overall on financial aid, and do so at the expense of diversity and student academic achievement.

Aren't you from southern California? How did you end up racing on the ski team for four years?

I've been skiing every winter since I was three, mostly in Park City, Utah. I have to say that I prefer bumps, powder and trees to the East Coast ice and breakneck racing speeds. I've also been thinking about going back to snowboarding for a while, just to mix things up a bit.

Any objections to the AAS failing to fund the ski team in next fall's budget?

Yes! It's a travesty that a team that has such a rich history at the College has become the scapegoat for the politically motivated.

Are there any classes that you regret not having taken these past four years?

Of course. I wish I had taken something in art history and possibly another literature course. I also wish that a bad first-semester freshman-year Math 12 experience hadn't scared me away from taking more math classes.

What superhero would you want to be and why?

Jem! "She's truly, truly, truly outrageous."

What did you think about the end of "The Apprentice"?

I'm in love with Bill, seriously! It may sound irrational, perhaps a bit farfetched, but I plan on marrying him.

Any fun plans for senior week?

Senior week? Do you really have to ask?

What do you want to make sure to do before you graduate?

It's not so much what as where.

What are your immediate after-college plans?

Traveling in Europe for two weeks with my roommate Helen [Dole '04] and then moving to New York City.

What are you going to be doing in New York City next year?

I'm working for an economic consulting firm called NERA in their antitrust and intellectual property division.

And what do you see yourself doing 10 years from now?

I'm not really sure-it involves cute pantsuits and a big city, but I like not having a set-in-stone plan.

What's one thing people would be surprised to know about you?

It's a toss up. I'm a Mormon (long story), but I'm not exactly practicing, and, though it's quite humiliating to admit, I have a registered version of Snood on my computer.
