the personals: questions for Elizabeth Chiang '05
By Justine Chae, Managing Arts and Living Editor
What do you think of the new dorms?

They're lovely, but I'd trade in my mountain view for cell phone reception. Also, it would have reflected some foresight if the endowment had a dorm damage budget attached to it.

What did you do during fall break?

I slept. I watched "CSI" re-runs. I did crossword puzzles. I plucked my eyebrows. My friends hiked the Notch, but I thought it was too hard, and didn't go.

What did you do this summer?

I learned to bartend this summer in New York City, and I survived solely on tips and tonic water. I was young and poor, and in awe of the Big Apple. It was all very romantic.

What's your drink of choice?

This summer my boss at the bar taught me to drink whisky. I developed a taste for it after a while, and found that customers found a girl who could shoot Jack and Johnnie kind of sexy. I personally prefer Jameson's Irish Whisky.

Do you like the way people dress at Amherst?

It's no Rodeo Drive, but it's practical.

What's the best party you've been to at Amherst?

I love DKE Champagne every year. The weather is beautiful, people look great and it's always good, clean fun. The swim team throws a Jimmy Buffett-themed party after the Williams meet during Interterm every year just before we depart on our training trip to Puerto Rico. Last year was particularly memorable because the women's team won for the first time, and the men won for the second. That was pretty awesome.

How has being on the swim team affected your college career?

It makes me more popular and keeps my body tight.

Any secret swim team rituals you can let us in on?

They mostly involve inflicting our popularity and tight bodies on each other.

Are you taking any good classes this semester?

Yes-Geology 11 is living up to its reputation.

The elections are coming up ... who are you going to vote for and why?

I epitomize the voter apathy issue, though to my credit I'm not casting anything in ignorance. My knowledge of the world is pretty limited to pre-seventeenth century western Europe. Would it suffice to say that I voted for the Yankees in the ALCS?

No opinion at all? What if you had a gun pointing to your head? Who you vote for then?

Ehh ... I'd jump on the bandwagon and vote Kerry, I guess. He's pretty hot.

If you had all the money in the world, what would you do with it?

First I'd get myself a dog. Then I'd buy every back issue of The New York Times, strip the arts sections for the crossword puzzles and do them. I'm not much of a philanthropist.

Have you thought about what you're going to name your kids?

Yes, but they are secrets.

Would you want them to come to Amherst?

Nah; it's too expensive.

What are your ideal plans for next year?

To be living in a warmer place; perhaps near the Mediterranean.

What can you see yourself doing 10 years from now?

Getting hitched or maybe knocked up.

What do you want to make sure to do before you graduate?

Pick apples-it's so New England. Get a job. Eat at Bub's. Learn to throw a frisbee. Hike the Notch.
