the personals: questions for Cushing Donelan '05
By Ashley Arana, Arts & Living Editor
Didn't you go to boarding school?

Yes, I went to the Hotchkiss School for three years. It's in the northwest corner of Connecticut. I had the greatest experience, and the people I met were amazing. I liked living in a dorm the most. It's kind of like freshman year housing at Amherst because everyone is together, things are new and there is a lot of hanging out. I would recommend it for someone who is outgoing and takes chances. It's hard to be away from home at such a young age.

What's your favorite music?

I'm a pretty big fan of reggae music-all artists and styles. I find it relates to me the most; hence, my lifelong love of JAH and my dreadlocks freshman year. But I'm open to other genres.

Do you have any siblings?

I have two sisters and a brother. My younger sister, Moriah, is a freshman here and my older brother and sister work in New York in finance. I am very lucky because we have a very close family and it's always fun to be together.

What's it like being at school with your sibling?

It's fun. We overlapped for a year in high school too. It's nice to see a familiar face. I think it can be tough for her as the younger sibling, but I'm happy she is here. I hope to enjoy the rest of the time we have together and then she can have her own experiences at Amherst.

Where did you live freshman year?

Freshman year was great. I lived in the corner penthouse in Stearns. My roommate, Mike Strong '05, and I hit it off well and had a great floor.

Do you have any special stories from freshman year?

Something funny would happen every day freshman year because things were new and exciting. A story that comes to mind is when my friends and I packed nine of us into an Explorer at three in the morning. We went to Williams to camp out on the 50-yard line before the football game. However, there were cops on the field, so we MacGyvered our way into a common room to sleep until the game.

Do you have a role model and/or hero?

The person who has had a strong presence in my life would have to be my dad. He has been a great father and I have learned a lot from him. One of my heroes is Tom Selleck because I'm a huge "Magnum, PI" fan. As a private investigator on Hawaii who drives a Ferrari, he pretty much has it made. He [Selleck] is also a great person in real life. I've had the pleasure of meeting him.

Any advice you'd give to underclassmen?

Never get discouraged. Amherst can be a tough place, but you're all here for a reason. Believe that you are special and don't hold back in anything you do. Go abroad-it's an amazing experience and you will have a new perspective when you come back to Amherst.

I hear you're an exceptional athlete. What sports do you play?

Thanks for the compliment. I play squash and lacrosse. Squash I picked up as a freshman because of my roommate. In lacrosse I play goalie. Most people think it's a crazy position, but it's fun and rewarding.

What's your craziest drunken memory?

I don't drink. But the times I do, it can be pretty fun. Homecoming this year was pretty memorable. Probably the best string of parties that I've experienced at Amherst. Well, when the math team won in overtime, it got pretty crazy.

What's your major?

I'm a fine arts major. I enjoy looking at paintings, sculpture and architecture. You can learn about different peoples, cultures and time periods. On the studio side, sculpture has been quite fun to explore.

Any plans for next year, or is that a touchy subject?

Well, I guess I would be open to anything. I know I want nothing to do with a day job. My plan as of now is to bartend in Nantucket for the summer, go to Europe for a couple of months, spend the New Year at home, then drive cross-country, move to Hollywood and become an actor and writer.
