I'm from Brooklyn, N.Y. It's by far the best city in the world. Basically anything you want in the world you can find in Brooklyn. People in Manhattan haven't realized that yet. The people, I feel, are more real than they are anywhere else. I definitely miss just being in Brooklyn. You can always find people out and about at any hour of the day, any day of the year in Brooklyn. Things shut down early here at Amherst. The subway's always an experience, too. I'm definitely excited about going home for Thanksgiving Break.
Is college all that you expected it to be?
I expected good things from Amherst. I love, love, love being able to wake up two minutes before class after six years of taking the train for one hour everyday to get to school. People are really friendly here. I like being able to look outside the window and see mountains. My workload hasn't become too oppressive yet, so that's good.
What is the one thing you're proudest of?
I'm really proud of being at Amherst without feeling like I've dedicated my whole life to getting here. When I was in high school, I didn't do things just to get into college later on, and even here, I don't do things just to get into grad school. Personally, I feel successful even though I've never really held success as an end-goal. I've just always done what interests me.
What extracurricular activities have you gotten involved in?
I've been going to La Causa, which is a really cool group of people with backgrounds similar to mine. It feels like I'm home in Brooklyn again. It gives me a chance to talk to and be around upperclassmen. I'm also going to be a DJ for WAMH sometime soon. I had to take a six-page written test to be a DJ. I passed. I'm expecting lots of request calls.
What kind of music do you think you'll play on your show?
I'm mostly into hip-hop, so that's what I'm going to play. Most of the DJs on WAMH don't play hip-hop, which shocks me. The music people listen to here is completely different from the music people listen to at home.
Do you know what you'd like to major in?
I'm completely undecided. I'm planning to double major in Spanish and something else without even trying. I'm already taking a Spanish class and am planning to go abroad. I'm pretty good at Spanish. If I went to Spain right now, I could probably do really well for myself. It runs in my family.
What is your family background?
Ethnically, I'm as white as possible. My family line goes back to Lord Baltimore, George Calvert. He owned Maryland in the 1600s. On my
mother's side, the family goes back to the Mayor of Plymouth
Colony. I've got a signer of the Declaration of Independence somewhere in there. I've got roots. But everyone in my family is fluent in Spanish even though they're all white.
What is your favorite movie?
If you haven't seen "Ong Bak the Thai Warrior," then you haven't lived a fulfilling life.
Is there anything else you would like people to know about you?
Whenever I got questions like these during my college interviews, I could never come up with an answer, and I knew it hadn't gone well. Questions like these always stump me.
Why is James the best dorm on campus?
I mean, just look at it. Every person on campus wishes they live in James or had lived in James. No matter where I want to go, it's the most centrally located place on campus. It's close to Val, the social dorms, classes, everything. The third floor is the greatest floor on campus. I love my room and I love my roommate. I couldn't be happier.
