This week in Amherst history--December 1, 1951: 'Amherst' sings on key

Fifty-five years ago this week, the College's reputation as the "Singing College" rang true when the show "Amherst with Music" opened for the first of two nights at College Hall on Dec. 1, 1950. This musical, which focused on the history of Amherst College, was produced collaboratively by three members of the class of 1953: Peter Schrag, author; Richard M. Earle, composer; and Gordon A. Lameyer, lyricist.

The musical borrowed material from Claude Fuess's book, "Amherst-The Story of a New England College," but added a satirical twist to the College's past. For instance, one actor portrayed caricatures of past College Presidents. While "Amherst with Music" included such noble scenes as the founding of the College and the first Commencement, the show also included such amusing scenes as a parody of gym class and the courting of Smith girls.

The cast of 25, including four students from Mt. Holyoke College, shone in their acting, singing and comedic talents. They belted out clever numbers such as "Lord Jeff's Song" and "The Building with the Most Distinguished Tower" in addition to 12 other original songs composed by Earle and Lameyer. Although the catchy music received much praise, the lyrics were at times a tad trite. The book was also the object of criticism in that the story truly depended upon the flair of the cast to deliver the lines; however, these lines were indeed witty and funny, and the creators of "Amherst with Music" deserve tremendous credit for their creative accomplishment.

As for more technical aspects, the small, musical ensemble that accompanied the actors consisted of a piano, a double bass and drums. Ralph Englesman '53 directed the production. Designed by John R. Walker '51, the colorful backdrop showed College Hill from the perspective of the Kirby Theater site years earlier. Students received free admission with their student activities card; otherwise admission to the musical cost 75 cents.

"Amherst with Music" was produced and performed in an age of school spirit, an age that calls to be rekindled.
