the personals: questions for Jess "Lord Jeff" Rothschild '08
By Katie Roza, Arts & Living Editor

I understand that you are the one and only mascot at the College. What was your most bizarre moment as a mascot?

I would always try to get to the field a little bit before the game was scheduled to start, so I would have time to hide and put on the costume so that nobody would know it was me. One time, I was walking around in the costume before the football game started, and, well, when you're wearing the big head, you don't have any peripheral vision, so ... I happened to walk into one of the big metal trash cans right in front of the cops.

And then what happened?

They laughed at me ... I think they thought I was drunk.

Do kids like the mascot?

Half the kids are terrified and cry when I approach. Others come over to play and give me a high-five. Sometimes parents send their kids to ask me if I'm a guy or girl.

I see you piling whipped cream on your hot chocolate all the time in the dining hall. What does whipped cream mean to you?

I believe that it is an integral food group to be consumed at least twice daily. And, in order to fulfill my distributional requirements, I top my hot chocolate two times at breakfast and two times at lunch. It makes me happy.

So ... cream made from scratch or out of a can?

It's gotta be out of can. You have to be able to swirl the whipped cream in the hot chocolate, and you have to be able to make perfect cones on top. Have you not seen my perfectly shaped cones? Sometimes I feel like a Statue of Liberty walking back to my table with my whipped cream torch.

Did you experience culture shock coming to Amherst from your hometown of Memphis, Tenn.?

I didn't own a coat before I came to college. In high school, I ate lunch outside every day with my friends. During the winter months, I wonder why Amherst can't be located in the South ... In a lot of ways, I feel like I'm in a different country being up here. Other than the weather being totally different, the political climate here is the complete opposite of what it is back home, which makes me feel at home, like I belong here.

You're one of those over-achievers who decided to triple major. Tell us that story.

When I applied to college, I knew I wanted to major in political science since I've always been interested in politics. I first got involved in politics in high school. The local Gore-Lieberman headquarters was literally right around the corner from my home, so I just walked there after school every day. It was there that I met the cast of "The West Wing" while they were campaigning for Gore.

That's one down. How about your other two majors?

I fell into a psychology major. There were some requirements I had to fulfill before I could take a psychology seminar about psychology and law I wanted to take... I realized that psychology was a subject I really enjoyed, so I majored in it. Then there's computer science. I really enjoyed Computer Science 11, so I stuck with it.

Your thesis, in 10 words or less.
