Piece together a plan to visit Smith College's art exhibition on structural design this fall semester, titled "The Art of Structural Design: A Swiss Legacy." Organized by Princeton University's Art Museum and Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, the exhibit brings together the work of Robert Maillart, Othmar Ammann, Heinz Isler, Christian Menn and their teachers Wilhelm Ritter and Pierre Lardy, the most impressive group of Swiss structural engineers/artists in the 20th century. (Sept. 4 through Dec. 10, Smith College Museum of Art. $3 for students.)
The Five College Early Music Program welcomes students, faculty and community members interested in auditioning to sing or play in one or more ensembles. Auditions will be painless! Performances sponsored by the program feature baroque and Renaissance music played on modern and period instruments and sung in historically-informed syle. (Sept. 8, Fri., 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., Room 7, Arms Music Building. No admission charge. For more information, e-mail reisenst@mtholyoke.edu.)
To kick off their lineup of cinematic gems this year, FLICS will be screening the highly original "Thank You For Smoking." Keep an eye out for Willian H. Macy's turn as mockingly-named senator Ortolan K. Finistirre and for a convincing, balanced performance by Aaron Eckhart as the lead. It's smart, it's funny, it's a keeper and you're very welcome. (Sept. 7, Thurs., 7:30 p.m.; Sept 8-10, Fri. to Sun., 7:30 p.m. and 10 p.m., Campus Center Theater. No admission charge.)
