The Personals: Questions for Jame Park '08
By Donatella Galella, Arts & Living Editor
How does it feel to be a junior?

I feel old, but it's pretty much the same as sophomore and freshman year. I'm excited about studying abroad.

So where are you studying abroad?

Tokyo, Japan, in the CIEE (Council on International Educational Exchange) program. Well, I sort of studied abroad after freshman year over the summer in Korea and that was so much fun that if [Tokyo] is anything remotely like it, I'll have a lot of fun compared to Amherst College or life in general.

What's your major and why did you choose it?

I'm an econ major 'cause econ's fun, as weird as that sounds. I have no desire to go into a specific field of econ like finance or anything like that. It was the expected Asian thing to do. (Laughs.)

What's it like to be a Zumbye? Do women throw themselves at you?

No. (The interviewer's roommate attempts to throw herself at him.) Zumbyes has almost no correlation with me and women. But singing with a group of incredible friends is an experience that can never be duplicated anywhere else. I feel it's so much fun. I'm a musician; I play violin, I play piano and just being able to be in that environment where we can think of fulfilling musical-I don't know something like that.

I saw your Language of Movement performance and I thought you were a great dancer. Where did you learn to breakdance?

Streets of Brooklyn-and I mean "streets" as in the sociological terms of it, not actual streets; it's more or less meaning the outdoor environment. There's a park I would go to and meet people and learn from them. [This was] over the summer in Brooklyn with a friend of mine dancing everyday and chilling with people from the Bronx and Brooklyn who were all black and Hispanic. That's sort of politically incorrect, but it's true.

Describe your style in terms of fashion.

Well, for everyday college life, anything comfortable and warm. But if going out to party or there's a really cool event where people get dressed up and such, I would be rockin' like there's a way that b-boys dress. You take that idea; you create your own character with it. I'd definitely be wearing a hat like a fedora. Oh, and Pro-Keds sneakers.

What's the most exciting thing that has happened since you've been back at Amherst?

We have new Zumbyes. They seem like they're really chill. We have one more Korean added to the group, which is pretty cool. We have three Koreans in the group. Yeah, go Korea.

Do you have a favorite Valentine fortune cookie fortune?

"Help! I'm trapped in a cookie-making factory!"

Why doesn't Hello Kitty look like a cat?

It does.

It does not! (Our correspondent shows him a picture of the supposed cat.)

I'm a third-year Japanese language student so maybe the culture has rubbed off on me. Ed: It does look like a cat.

Who was your favorite Power Ranger?

I'd say the Black Ranger 'cause I remember they gave him a gun as a weapon while everyone else got swords or arrows. He's got a big gun too.

Which board game is most representative of your life?

Scrabble. You can put whatever word into my head and it'll connect to another one somehow.
