Stanford University philosopher John Perry will give the second annual Amherst Lecture in Philosophy titled "'Borges and I' and 'I'." A reception will follow the lecture. Perry specializes in logic, metaphysics, philosophy of language and of the mind and is the host of "Philosophy Talk," a radio program which "questions everything ... except your intelligence." American photographer Garry Winogrand's portrayal of women fell well short of political correctness; Helen Gray Bishop wrote that "the proudest possessions of the Winogrand women are their breasts." These same women are part of a Smith College exhibit that features work from Winogrand's 1975 album "Women are Beautiful." Winogrand captured all of these images by simply walking the streets of New York City and accosting the various women who would strike his interest. As Winogrand said, "I don't know if all the women in the photographs are beautiful, but I do know that the women are beautiful in the photographs." (Now through Dec. 3, Smith College Museum of Art. No admission charge.)

Chess enthusiasts won't want to miss out on Smith College's Live-Action Chess Match. Come watch members of Smith's Science Fiction and Fantasy Club dress up as chess pieces and "fight their way across the board to take out the opposing king!" (Sat., 11 a.m., Chapin Lawn, Smith College. No admission charge.)
