The Personals: Questions for Bill Unsworth '07E
By Audrey Kim
Where are you from?

My tally is up to four. I was born in Northampton, and I grew up for the most part in Virginia and North Carolina. According to any legitimate sources you might ask, it's Illinois now.

Do you have a middle name?

Yes. Is there a further question? (He laughs.)

What is your middle name?

Merritt. It is my grandmother's maiden name.

I've heard that you went abroad. How long were you gone, and where did you go?

I did not go abroad. I took time off. I spent the last year working at a small IT firm in Virginia and taking a couple of classes at UVA.

What other activities are you involved in besides Mr. Gad's?

Very few at this point, especially since this is my thesis semester. At one point, I did a lot with WAMH. Intramural softball was on my list at one time or another. At this semester, it's just Gad's and theater work.

Do you know that you have fans who attend Gad's shows? What do you want to tell them?

Well, the answer to the first part is, I mean, I assume the group had fans. We're just really happy as a group that they enjoy it so much that they keep coming back every week, because we get a lot out of having a real rapport built up with our audience. So when we do shows at other places or for audiences that aren't our regular audience, it's not the same. If I had a request to make of my fans, our fans, I guess it would be some type of gang clothing would be excellent. If there was a t-shirt or some type of insignia that said "Gad's Nation" on it, that would be pretty excellent.

Thanksgiving is coming up. Do you like dark meat or white meat?

I like white meat, although I certainly have an appreciation for turkey of all colors and creeds.

So you're a breast man?

You could say that.

You're a theater & dance major. First, what is your favorite type of dance to perform? And second, what is your favorite type of dance to watch?

My favorite kind of dance to perform is somewhere between a head-nod and an awkward shuffle. My favorite kind of dance to watch is hip-hop.

Your character in "Proof" [Unsworth's senior thesis in acting] plays drums for a rock band. If you were in a band, what instrument would you play, and what would your band name be?

Well, I don't know if this makes me a method actor, but the instrument I've always wanted to learn was the drums. I'm at a loss for a good band name, but I will say that my buddy Ralph's band, Pistols at Dawn, has one of the best band names I've ever encountered.

What is your favorite food?

The curry chicken tea rolls from Fresh Side are my favorite food on this planet.

What is the weirdest food you have ever tried?

The weirdest food I have ever tried is probably haggis. It's surprisingly good, though.

So last weekend was Homecoming. Who is your favorite Amherst College alum and why?

Teller, from Penn and Teller. His economy with language ... No, just because I love Penn and Teller.

Would you rather watch the Winter Olympics or the Summer Olympics?

Summer Olympics. I'm not much of a skiing enthusiast or anything.

What is the most obscure movie you have ever watched?

There was a movie called "The Forbidden Zone" that's shot mainly in black and white, and is sort of a bizarro "Alice in Wonderland" with midgets. It's exceedingly good.

What is the most obscure band that you would recommend to people?

I don't know if he's really obscure anymore, but I try and make everybody that I encounter listen to Devendra Banhart. I think the record section is "Freak Folk"-he's got a band called Hairy Fairy. It's just really incredible music.

What is your favorite card game?

Dan Rice '05 taught me a game called Passoi, which is the most fun I've ever had playing cards.

Which one is your favorite: argyle, polka dot or plaid?

Argyle, by yards and yards, no pun intended.

This next question is timed.

I don't do well under pressure. You wouldn't think I do improv.

You only have three minutes to answer. What is your definition of "badass"?

My definition of "badass" is the following: Clint Eastwood in "Unforgiven." That's all.
