Living in Southern California for such a long time made me take sunshine for granted. I wanted to have a change of setting for my college days. Amherst just happened to send me a packet one day, and as I perused the catalog, I liked what I read and saw. Nonetheless, I was ambivalent until one day while I was hiking in the woods, a squirrel came up to me and seemed to say, "If you like squirrels, come to Amherst!" Indeed, I did like squirrels, and my decision to attend Amherst was set on that very day. I have not been disappointed with the abundance of squirrels here, but the inclement weather does make me miss home sometimes.
If you were at In-N-Out, what would you order?
I would order a strawberry shake and a Double-Double animal style. Their shakes are superb, and I hear that feral cats can smell an In-N-Out strawberry shake from up to 94.6 miles away.
Preregistration ended last Friday. What classes did you preregister for? What classes were you interested in that you ultimately did not preregister for?
I registered for Data Structures, Sculpture, Social Organization of Law and Introduction to Philosophy. I am really excited about sculpture and data structures though. The last two I am unsure about; I am sure I will change my mind over the summer.
What activities are you involved in on campus?
My commitment to extracurricular activities has been in a downward trend ever since the first semester. I currently am not involved in campus functions, but I hope this will change next semester.
In three words, how do you think your roommate would describe you?
Transcendent, innocuous and virile.
Was there anything about Amherst that surprised you after you got here?
The hilly terrain really bothered me. Nowhere in the booklet did they mention the hills that I would have to climb each day for food and classes. In my opinion, any advantages of a small campus are nullified if there are hills. There should be a law that requires colleges to release contour maps of their campuses.
Who is your favorite Amherst alum and why?
I haven't met any personally, but I consider Calvin Coolidge amazing. How did he achieve so much whilst saying so little? That's a skill I seek.
If your life became a TV show, what genre would it be?
I find "Curb Your Enthusiasm" similar to my life.
Name one artist/band/group you've been listening to lately. Would you recommend any particular songs?
I like Snow Patrol's "Chasing Cars."
Name one hairstyle you think should never have come into existence.
I am not a fan of mullets, but mohawks are acceptable.
Are you looking forward to watching any movies this summer?
"Shrek the Third" looks good.
What do you think of Val food?
Val food is a step up from high school food, but the menu does get old after a while. I really like their filet mignon Fridays though (it's on the back of the menu).
What is your favorite place on campus to relax, or do anything but homework?
The comforts of Fayerweather 259 are absolutely astonishing. I like to sit back in the jacuzzi there and just inhale the musky smell of damp wood.
Do you use pens or pencils?
I find that pencil marks are easier to clean off my body.
What is your favorite cartoon character?
I don't know if this counts as a cartoon character, but I definitely like the Michelin Man, and the Pillsbury Doughboy comes in a close second. I just want to poke that little guy and hear him chuckle.
