Author Mark Costello will read from his works which include novels "Bag Men" and "Big If," which won a national book award. "Big If," a story about politics and paranoia moved Jay McInerney of The New York Times to call it "a dazzling performance." With this second novel, Costello enters the big leagues of American fiction. Wed., 8 p.m., Pruyne Lecture Hall, Fayerweather Hall. No admission charge.

The Center for Russian Culture will celebrate the 200th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the United States and Russia when they host "John Quincy Adams in Russia." Adams was the first U.S. ambassador to Russia. The program will consist of a dramatic dialogue between Adams' biographer Dr. Lynn Parsons and professional actor and scriptwriter Jim Cooke. Renowned concert pianist Richard Goode gives this season's opening performance of The Music at Amherst Concert Series. Goode's performance will feature pieces by Bach, Brahms, Chopin, Debussy and Haydn. Thur., 8 p.m., Buckley Recital Hall. Call 413-542-2195 for ticket information.

Emily Dickinson remains an enigmatic figure to her readers today. In an effort to promote greater public understanding of the poet's life and poetry, the Emily Dickinson Museum presents My Verse is alive, a new exhibit that details the posthumous publication history of Dickinson's poems. The exhibit includes family artifacts and documents that inform Dickinson's poetry. Now thru Dec. 8, Dickinson Homestead. No admission charge.
