The Personals: Questions for Ashley Gibson '09
By
As a member of ACEMS, is there any advice you could give to first-years about the upcoming cold/flu season?

I would recommend that you wash your hands frequently, and make use of the hand sanitizer in Val after you eat so you will not pass germs from Val to class. Be sure to get plenty of sleep, eat lots of citrus fruits (for Vitamin C) and cut down on sharing drinks with friends this time of year. Even if your friends don't look like they have a cold, they could have some bacteria in their systems that could get you sick. Be careful!

You're the director of Gospel Choir this year. Are there any upcoming events at which you will be performing?

Tanya Jackson '10 and I are the proud co-directors of the Gospel Choir this year. We plan on doing a bunch of performances at Goodwin AME Zion Church (right across the street from the Cadigan Center) and the Wesley United Methodist Church. The Gospel Choir also has an established role in the Bi-Semester Worship service, the first of which is coming up this month on Sunday, Sept. 20 at 1 p.m. in Chapin Chapel. We also have some other exciting performances on tap, but I'd like those to remain secret until we have more details!

Do you have a middle name? If so, what is it?

I technically have two. I have a middle name and I also carry my mother's maiden name, making my full name Ashley Elizabeth Goins Gibson-a mouthful, I know.

What is the most recent movie you've watched? Did you enjoy it?

I recently saw "Smoking Aces" and thought it was pretty good, but enjoyed "Stardust" more and was actually embarrassed at the level of excitement and interest I had with "Transformers."

What is your favorite "Harry Potter" book? Did you stand in line to get the last book? (If so, did you dress up?)

I did not stand in line to get the book, though I wish I did. I am a fan but I went the day after the book came out. I'd rather not pick a favorite book since they are all so good.

What do you miss about New Jersey?

I miss my family the most. I have a huge (seriously huge) family and we are all very close. Being away from them as well as being separated from my cat (Simba) and dog (Cleopatra) is sad for me. I also really miss going down the shore. That's right, I said it, down the shore-not to it, but down it.

What is the strangest food you have ever tried?

I think I ate cow's liver one day at a friend's house. I will not be trying that again.

What was/is your favorite childrens' television show?

I am a big "Fraggle Rock" fan and I also love the "Gummi Bears." I was a Disney girl growing up.

Where in the world is Carmen Sandiego?

If I were her, I'd be in Jamaica. It's warm and sunny and they thankfully did not just get wrecked by the hurricane that was headed their way.

If you were a fruit, what fruit would you be, and why?

I would be a mango, because they are from Jamaica and they are sweet, but not too sweet.

What's your favorite Monopoly game piece?

I'm almost certain the last time I played they had a little dog piece. I'm an animal-lover so I'm sure if there's an animal, it would be my favorite piece.

What do you like most about fall at Amherst? What should first-years do before snow falls?

First-years should get a chance to explore Amherst and the surrounding areas before snow makes it really tricky and annoying to get around. I really love the colors of the leaves in the trees overlooking Memorial Hill and the cool fall breezes.

Which decade of the 1900s had the best fashionable clothing trends?

Not being a huge fashionista personally, I may be the wrong person to ask. But I kind of liked the 70s more than anything else. I don't really understand most other fashions. Low slung jeans with flares, on the other hand, I get.
