In order to celebrate the last day of Engagement Week, spoken word artist Kelly Tsai will be performing in Keefe Campus Center. Tsai, a Brooklyn-based Chinese-Taiwanese American has performed at over 250 events around the world, and has been featured on three seasons of HBO’s award-winning “Russell Simmons’ Def Poetry.” Dessert will be served. Fri., 8:30 p.m. Friedman Room.

Lectures & Readings

The Colloquium on the American Founding will host a discussion entitled “The Case for Welcoming Immigrants—and Who is Hurt.” The speakers will be President of Strategic Solutions Washington Rick Swartz ’72, and Carol Swain, Professor of Law and Politics at Vanderbilt University. MSwartz founded the National Immigration Forum, an influential advocacy agency for immigrants and refugees. Swain is an award-winning author who recently published “Debating Immigration.” Wed., 8 p.m. Cole Assembly Room.

Philosopher and Princeton University emeritus professor Harry Frankfurt will give a lecture entitled “Inadvertance and Responsibility.” Frankfurt is most recently famous for his best-selling book “On Bullshit.” His lecture represents the third annual Amherst Lecture in Philosophy, which brings a distinguished philosopher to the College each year. A reception will follow the talk. Thurs., 4:30 p.m. Cole Assembly Room.

Shabnam Hasmi will give a lecture entitled “Religious Nationalism and Democratic Politics in India: Lessons from Gujarat.” Hashmi is the founder and director of ANHAD (Act Now for Harmony and Democracy). She will also share her experiences from her advocacy work, especially with women survivors of the violence in Gujarat. Thurs., 12 p.m. Keefe Campus Center 174-176.

Professor Hilary Williamson-Hoynes will give a talk on “Consumption Responses to In-Kind Transfers: Evidence from the Introduction of the Food Stamp Program.” Professor Williamson-Hoynes is a professor of economics at the UC Davis. Wed., 4:30 p.m. Paino Lecture Hall.

Activities

Valentine Dining Hall will be hosting its first Student Iron Chef Contest this week. Come and watch four teams battle it out for the grand prize of a $150 gift certificate to Judie’s located in downtown Amherst. Dean of Students Ben Lieber will be among the judges. Thurs., 5 p.m. for cooking at the stir fry station and 6:15 p.m. for judging in the Upper Terrace of Valentine.

Amherst students are invited to attend the NYC Not-for-Profit Career Fair at Columbia University. The fair will host recruiters from companies such as the Peace Corps, NYC Teaching Fellows, The Institute of World Politics and the U.S. Army. Free transportation to and from the fair will be provided by the college; students must give a $20 deposit when they sign up. Dress neatly—and bring your résumé! Fri., in front of Converse. Bus leaves 7:30 a.m., returns by 7 p.m.
