Behind the Scenes: Questions for Jacqueline Bearce
By Jennifer Potanka ’11, Contributing Writer
What is your position at the college? What does a day at work entail?

I am the Director of the Counseling Center. My background is in psychology and my role as director engages me in many of the things that psychologists do. I provide administrative oversight of the Counseling Center; I meet with students in counseling and psychotherapy sessions; I supervise counseling interns; I meet with Counseling Center staff; and I consult with others on campus that are concerned about students’ mental health.

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in a small rural town in southern New Jersey.

How did you end up in Amherst?

I initially moved to the town of Amherst to attend graduate school at the University of Massachusetts. I found the town a pleasant place to live so I remained in the area. I came to Amherst College in the early 1990s as a part-time psychologist. I was appointed director in 2001 when the former director retired.

What is your family like?

In addition to those people who would traditionally be considered family, there are many special people in my life who I consider to be my family and who are not related to me by blood or marriage. My family members are generally sincere and interesting people who mostly work in helping professions. When we get together, we always share a meal and enjoy lively conversation. I would also describe my family as having high moral standards and engaged in continuous learning. These people are gifts to me.

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?

For now, it is right here where I am.

Favorite musical group/artist and why?

I enjoy many types of music. I have long been a fan of the Beatles, and I enjoy Il Divo. Currently, my favorite is the contemporary gospel music of Richard Smallwood. I find the music and lyrics both touching and inspiring.

What is your favorite movie and why?

“It’s a Wonderful Life” is my all time favorite movie. For me, the film is like a morality play that offers an important life lesson of what it means to make a difference in the world we live in.

What is your favorite place to eat in Amherst?

Amherst Chinese Restaurant.

What is your favorite thing about Amherst College?

I appreciate the students. I sincerely enjoy working with the men and women here who are talented, creative and committed to learning, especially when the learning is about themselves.

Do you have any hidden talents?

I consider myself to be a talented and creative cook. I enjoy cooking, and my friends and family enjoy what I cook.

What is your favorite hobby?

I solve puzzles of all sorts: crossword, logic, jigsaw and Sudoku are my favorites.

What do you typically do after a day at work?

After completing errands, I go home. Once home, I watch Food Network and read the paper while I prepare supper. Later I respond to personal e-mails, read fiction and/or prepare for classes that I teach.

How many years have you worked at Amherst? What positions did you hold before you came to Amherst?

I have been at Amherst College for about 18 years. Initially I worked in the Counseling Center on a part-time basis. At the same time, I worked for the Amherst Public Schools as an internal consultant on diversity and equity. Prior to that, I worked as the clinical director in a community mental health clinic. For a time, I had a private psychotherapy practice, and I continue to have a consulting practice, consulting to therapists and people who do diversity training. I am currently on the faculty at Cambridge College (Springfield) in the Counseling Psychology department.
