The Personals: Questions for Spencer Russell '12
By Brian Kim '12, A&L Managing Editor
Where are you from?

I live in a small town in New Hampshire about an hour away, but I was born in Rhode Island and have lived all over New England.

Why did you choose to come to Amherst? What do you like most about it?

Honestly, I had four top choices, all for different reasons. At Amherst, I loved the campus, the classes, the track coach and of course my host Sean Legister ’11. Ultimately, Amherst was the only one of my top four schools I got into, so the final decision was easy for me.

What is your major? What other interests besides your major do you have?

I plan to declare psychology as my major this spring. I also enjoy philosophy and music and am looking into the possibility of adding music as a double major. Outside of the classroom, I play the piano and hurdle for the track team.

What has been your favorite class so far at Amherst and why?

My favorite class was Logic. The subject matter in itself was both challenging and interesting, and I enjoyed Professor George’s class. Logic was definitely one class I never wanted to skip.

You are a Diversity Open House (DIVOH) intern. Why did you choose to become a part of DIVOH?

I applied to be a diversity intern because I enjoyed my experiences hosting DIVOH prefrosh as a freshman, and I wanted to help the admissions office in a greater capacity. It’s hard to pass up an opportunity to get paid for something you like to do.

What do you do as a DIVOH intern?

As diversity interns, we work with the admissions office to recruit students from minority or underprivileged backgrounds to visit the school for the diversity open houses (DIVOH). We do all the work behind the DIVOHs, from the less glamorous world of stapling, photocopying and stuffing packets to reading applications, arranging travel plans and throwing the best prefrosh weekends possible.

What do you like most about being a DIVOH intern?

I love the people I work with. The other interns as well as the admissions officers are all just really funny, laid-back people, and we manage to have a lot of fun while getting a lot accomplished. I think any student who attended DIVOH in the past can attest to the friendly yet professional atmosphere the interns create.

Compared to previous DIVOHs, how did the last weekend go?

I’m only a first semester diversity intern, but from what I’ve heard from the others, we put together a fun, informative and organized open house that was as “good,” if not better than those in the past.

If I were to look at your iPod, what is the most embarrassing song that I would find?

I’m too broke for an iPod, but none of my songs embarrass me. I’m proud that the first song on my iTunes is Aaron’s Party.

What is your favorite food at Val?

My favorite Val food is the Aus Jus manwiches, hands down. I think the Frank’s Red Hot Chicken manwiches are a bit overrated, but the deep fried hot dogs definitely show a lot of promise.

If there were a movie made portraying your life, who would play you and why?

I would have Samuel L. Jackson play my life because of his comedic genius. Sure, he might not have the good looks or “talent” of a Will Smith, but as long as he yells a lot at really inappropriate times, I would be content.

What adjective would best describe you?

Handsome ... and humble.

What do you think is the first impression that people usually get of you?

First impressions for me are hit or miss, depending on who I meet. I like to open with about two to three jokes, and if the response is lukewarm then I’m usually in for a pretty awkward encounter.

Describe something that is very unique about you.

Despite five round trips from New Hampshire to Amherst, I have a sprightly 14-month-old Beta fish named Jonathon Finns, or “Jonnafins,” that I’ve had with me since I started at Amherst last fall.

Any last comments?

It would have been fun to make the crime log again, but I’ll take what I can get.
