The Personals: Fred Shipley
By Jorge Alvarado '12, Managing A&L Editor
Where are you from?

Brooklyn, NY.

What compelled you to enroll at Amherst?

When I came to visit, I had a long talk with Professor Taubman, who really imparted upon me the value of a small school. He really changed my entire opinion of the school.

Do you get along with your roommate?

Yes. Beyond that, it’s far too rich a relationship to capture all of the nuances in a couple sentences.

How did you become involved with the Ultimate Frisbee team?

Pretty much every male member of the freshman class went to the first day of practice, so I just stuck around after that. My time with the team has been luscious, to say the least.

What kind of music do you listen to?

World music.

What major do you plan on studying?

Math and/or physics.

Is James Dormitory the best dorm ever?

Yes. It’s the closest freshman dorm to Schwemm’s and Val.

What’s your favorite kind of pie?

I don’t like cooked fruit, so I guess Shepherd’s.

What’s the most embarrassing song you have in your iTunes (or other) collection?

“Total Eclipse of the Heart” by Bonnie Tyler.

What did you do over Interterm?

I built a steam engine. It’s in my room now, and it’s pretty amazing.

Any interesting plans for the summer?

Not yet. I’m hoping to get a fellowship in a physics lab.

What three adjectives best describe Fred?

Imprecise, gallant and aerial.

Ok, now what three adjectives actually describe Fred Shipley?

Money, hoes and clothes (I know none of those are adjectives).

Where do you plan on living next year?

I want to live in Marsh House next year.

What’s with the pants?

My pants were in a space shuttle accident and have been exposed to radiation. Since then, they’ve been really bright and small, like the Fantastic Four.
