Club Focus

"Amherst has more Jews than most people would expect, but right now they feel trapped by programming that really doesn't interest them," said Mike Proman '03, explaining the impetus behind his creation of a yet to be named Jewish Social Council. By adding a social aspect to the traditional religious agenda of Hillel, the group hopes to strengthen the Jewish community within a new context.

According to Proman, nearly one in five Amherst students considers himself to be of Jewish heritage. This new organization will try to reach those Jewish students who, while they may not have been involved in religious functions in the past, are interested in meeting other members of the Jewish community.

Students involved in the group noted that the new committee will work with-and not against-Hillel. "While Hillel addresses the need of a religious presence," Proman explained, "this Jewish SoCo is meant to enhance the social image of Hillel by bringing out Jews that have not traditionally responded to Hillel-based programs."

In addition to the religious aspects of Judaism, the group is now "trying to extend the community to students who consider themselves culturally Jewish," according to Jennifer Kaufman '03E, who co-hosted the first organizational meeting with Proman last Wednesday.

The group's plans include an inaugural event on Nov. 4, a pre-party for people to become acquainted with each other and with the committee. Prospective future social events include trips to concerts in the area, a golf/tennis outing on campus and a mixer with Five-College Jews.

Non-Jewish students may be pleased to know that the organization is open to anyone interested. "We don't want to send the message that Jews as an affinity group desire social separatism," said Kaufman.

"While the main focus of the group is to unite the Jews on campus, anyone is welcome to come," Proman said. "I personally find that attending an event of a different ethnic club can be incredibly beneficial to understanding how other faiths work. I think a lot can be learned by all."
