All-Stars in Action
By Kelly Theim, Features Editor
"The kids were just incredible," said Andrew Unger '03 of the New York youths he worked with this past summer. Unger taught at The Ghetto Film School, a South Bronx non-profit organization established last year by a brother of Visiting Writer Daniel Hall. The program seeks to expose young people to film and art programs that they might not otherwise have the opportunity to explore.

Unger taught documentary film and silent narrative film at the school. During the first part of the summer, he co-taught a class of nine South Bronx students, ranging in age from 15 to 18, to develop documentary pieces. During the second portion, each student worked to create a short silent narrative film.

"[The program's director] really wanted to make it about the craft and teaching the kids how to use it," said Unger. The school receives no funds from the government, but rather from media outlets like MTV and VH1 The Source. "It's not just about taking the students and trying to do social work," said Unger. There will be a screening of the students' work sometime near the end of this semester, possibly as Unger's Drew House project. In addition, the students ventured to Mexico City this past summer. While there, they showed films from the school's first year and shot a documentary about homeless children in Mexico City.

Writing plays a key role in Unger's life. An English major, he is contemplating going abroad to Brazil next semester. Unger's long-term plans remain unknown. "I want to try to do fiction. Journalism is also very interesting to me ... psychology is as well, you just get to know people, which is what I find so interesting," he said. Unger was co-editor of A Further Room last year and plans to write for Circus this year. "To be able to be playful with your imagination ... to be able to do the type of creating that you did as a child can be really exciting and freeing," added Unger.
