This Week in Amherst History
Sixty-seven years ago this week, The Student reported on a political rally gone awry. Speakers had come for a rally supporting Democratic gubernatorial candidate James Curley, during which they were heckled by rowdy students chanting "We want Curley." The chanting persisted until the overweight politician's arrival, at which time the chant quickly switched to: "We want bacon."
"It is always a great pleasure to appear before a group of intellectuals even if they do wear rompers," said Curley when he arrived on campus. Students further hindered dialogue during Curley's stop in Amherst for his campaign with "hisses, catcalls, boos, whistles and cheers," The Student reported. For example, students met Curley's attempts to discuss the water situation in the town with cries for more beer.
Finally, although he said that "he was very fond of children and would like nothing better than to stay and talk with them," Curley became so visibly annoyed by such ill treatment that he was driven off campus.
