ELECTION STATEMENTS
By Candidates for 4/26/01 elections
SGO

Corresponding

Secretary

Anishah Cumber '02

Having been on the Committee of Priorities and Resources since my freshman year and the Residential Master Plan Committee since my sophomore year, I now want to increase my involvement at Amherst. My committee experiences in reviewing the budget and improving freshman housing have given me the ability to see how decisions are made at Amherst. I hope to be able to use these experiences in working with the SGO board to make Amherst even better.

College

Council

Class of 2002

Seth Birnbaum '02

After an unsuccessful run for the Vice Presidency, I considered retiring from campus politics. Perhaps giving lectures at prestigious universities, writing my memoirs and focusing my energies on my family. But the outpouring of letters and support attempting to persuade me otherwise brought me to the realization that I still have more to give. So I decided to throw my hat back into the ring and continue pursuing my dream of making Amherst College a better place. There are many critical issues that have an important effect on campus life: Theme Housing, Program Funding, Parking, Student Aid, Intellectual Responsibility, TAP-alternatives, and the list goes on. Having served on the College Council for three years now, I've moved along the learning curve regarding key issues such as these, as well as regarding the logistics behind enacting change on our campus. I believe I'm very qualified, and would love one last opportunity to give back to the campus from which I have taken so much.

Class of 2003

Peter Colarulli '03

My name is Peter Colarulli and I am seeking election to the College Council. I served on the SGO my freshman year and would like the opportunity to do so again. One of the greatest challenges facing Amherst is a disjointed and divided social scene. Furthermore, the housing for upperclassmen fosters these problems. To combat these issues I would explore the possibility of expanding Theme Housing to include two or three "Social Houses," which would operate like Theme Houses, aiming to improve the social life of campus and create a greater sense of community within the dorms. If you have questions about this idea, feel free to email me.

Rocío Digón '03

College Council needs a new voice. College Council's main focus is to deal with many aspects of student life on campus, including theme housing and intellectual responsibility. In this coming year, College Council will be reviewing the community Outreach program. Issues that need to be addressed include: does Outreach have enough vans for students to take off-campus for service projects? Does Outreach involve as many students as possible in its activities? As an individual who has been involved in Outreach programs such as Girls, Inc. I believe I am well qualified for this position. If elected, I will make sure your voice is heard.

Michael Flood '03

The College Council is charged with setting policy that affects our academic and social lives here at Amherst, and so it is an important position that must be taken seriously. Having served on the Library Committee and the Committee on Priorities and Resources, I have gained a greater understanding of how decisions are made among faculty, administration, and students at the College, and how changes can be implemented. My work on the Student Housing Advisory Committee (SHAC) has given me much insight into residential and social issues at Amherst. These experiences make me ready and able to serve as the Class of 2003 College Council representative. In office, I will work to study theme housing and improve the residential life on campus. Additionally, I would like to see more lecture and event programming, reforms to the atrocious parking situation, and an increase in the number of tenured faculty at Amherst.

Class of 2004

Eric Osborne '04

Amherst often seems to be a rather apathetic place. Instead of complaining, I want to take an active role and try to change things. As sophomore class College Council representative I would push for measures such as free telephone service, evening classes, self-scheduled exams, more meal plan options and a more inclusive social scene. I would also strive to bring back the all-school formals that Amherst used to have in the early 90s. I believe that I know enough people, from different enough backgrounds, to understand and represent the many different viewpoints of our class.

SFC

Athletics and

Tournaments:

Irv Rakhlin '04

My name is Irv Rakhlin '04 and I would like to be a part of the SFC. I have been involved in athletics and student government all my life. In high school I was captain of our football team and a four-year representative on the student council. At Amherst I am a member of the men's rugby team, and am hoping to become involved in the student government with your support. I have spent my first semester adjusting to and learning about our great community, and now I feel prepared to take on a more active role in its administration.

Cultural

David Jaquette '02:

As co-founder of the French Club ('98), representative to the SGO (1999-00), and as President of the French House (1999-00), I have worked extensively with the SFC and am familiar with its organization.

Through these experiences, I have also learned that the allocation of funds is hardly an easy one. However, I will bring an educated objectivity to the job that will allow me to serve the interests of the students and the committee.

Many of you may know me by my cultural activities on campus. Just a couple of weeks ago I performed in a French play, "Tartuffe". By serving on the SFC I hope to enable more activities of this nature to take place. I will be your advocate, not your adversary -your organization's goals will become my goals. Do not forget to vote!

Shawn Rose '02

My current position as SFC Chief-of-Staff has afforded me the opportunity to gain an intimate understanding of the organization as it strives to enrich student-life here at Amherst College. I firmly believe that an essential component of this 'enrichment' is creating an environment that fosters cultural awareness. My experience with the SFC along with the know-how that I have acquired through involvement in Charles Drew House projects and cultural organization events, make me a stellar candidate. As Cultural Subcommittee Chair, I will bring the energy, dedication and expertise that this post demands, and the student body deserves.

Entertainment

Andrew Sutton '03

It is no secret that Amherst College has an entertainment problem. Consistently, students here are disappointed by the quality and spectrum of entertainment that is provided. When faced with this problem many students just accept it as a facet of "Amherst life". I do not. I believe that Amherst's problem stems from misallocation of entertainment funding. If elected as SFC Entertainment Subcommittee Chair, I will work to solve this problem. I believe that my experiences within the entertainment industry will enable me to make discretionary decisions about funding and will help to improve the quality of social life at Amherst.

Films and Lectures

Blake Sparrow '04

My name is Blake Sparrow, and as SFC sub-chair for Films and Lectures, I promise to have checks returned on a timely basis. My experience on the SFC as class president will help out immensely, since I have the knowledge necessary to fulfill the position.

Please vote in the coming election.

Media and

Communications

Livia Angiolillo '04

Nearly every day of the week, students are greeted by several different publications as they walk through the entrance of Valentine. Ranging in subject matter and content, these publications are real sources of insight, humor and entertainment-they have fueled dinner conversations, and they have sparked real campus-wide dialogues and debates. Without significant funding or the support of the Student Finance Committee, these publications and artistic endeavors would be unable to continue. I hope that you will consider me for the position of Media and Communications Chair, for I will work to serve the student body, and its artistic and literary endeavors.

Volunteer

Stacey Kepler '04:

I love volunteering. Instead of only providing for our own amusement on campus, we need to increase funding for the groups that are helping people besides ... ourselves. All of the other committees are important, of course, but this committee is what changes townspeople's perceptions of the College. I want to fund many groups, and even though I am a member of MassPIRG, funding all groups who do good for the community is my goal. Volunteer events and clubs are less public than others on campus. I want to fight for more funding for these groups so they can get the money, publicity, and participation they deserve.

Tom Scott-Craig '04:

Hey hey! I'm Tom Scott-Craig, and I'm running for SFC Volunteer Chair. In my eyes, community service is an invaluable facet of Amherst's programming, and it has been a very personally important part of my experience here thus far. I want to work hard to make sure that our various volunteer groups and activities get plenty of funding and are well organized next year. As a First-Year Senator-At-Large, a member of Students Engaged in Active Service, and the former Head of Finances/Budget Manager for a local literary magazine, I think that my experiences provide me with a background uniquely suited to the Volunteer Chair position.

Alison Squire '04

My volunteer experience includes work at the Amherst Adolescent Center and Amherst Middle School. On campus, I am part of the volunteer organizations Listening to Our Bodies and the Amherst Feminist Alliance. Next year, I plan to continue my roles in these organizations and will be a freshmen Resident Counselor. My active roles in these groups have demanded responsibility, conscientiousness, and organization. If elected as SFC Volunteer Chair, I will use these qualities and experience to provide fair allocation of funds as well as timely response to the needs of the organizations.

Committees

Admission and Financial Aid

Julie Babayan '03

Year after year, the admissions office completes the amazing task of selecting a freshman class that is made up of very different individuals, who somehow complement each other. In selecting this slew of individuals they also know that no individual is simply just a member of a category. The policies that go toward creating this ideal, financially enabling individuals to come here, and supporting students when they get here are policies that I greatly respect. I have learned much this semester as a member of this committee and would like to continue this work in keeping my post.

Theodore S. Hertzberg '04

As a FCAFA Committeeman, I intend to strongly oppose the use of race-based criteria, which I believe to be wrong in principle. I pledge to fight against racially discriminatory 'color consciousness,' a deceptive breed of American racism wrapped in political correctness. I pledge to promote the establishment of a system that affords a helping hand to socioeconomically depressed applicants without making assumptions or drawing conclusions based on skin color. I pledge to support initiatives that will ensure that all qualified applicants receive the aid necessary to afford an Amherst education.

Stacey Kennard '03

This year, Amherst provided financial aid to more incoming applicants than ever before. As we increase financial aid, it is crucial that the college provide support to its growing number of financial aid recipients. From the perspective of an aid recipient, I will act as a student advocate, working with FACE and other concerned students to create an effective student employment office and to increase the availability of reserve readings. Like most members of the Amherst community, I also highly value the diversity of our student body and will work to ensure that future classes resemble the country more closely than they currently do.

Ignatius Lin '04

I plan to bring with me a clear vision on what need to be addressed. I intend to bring more socio-economical diversity to Amherst. We need to do an even better job at considering qualified applicants who unfortunately have less access to colleges like Amherst. Moreover, we need to make sure students are accepted as individuals and not as part of the statistics. Positive diversity can be achieved only if the students believe they are truly qualified to be here. Last, but equally important, I want to create a greater dialogue among us because constructive inputs deserve to be heard.

Marisol Thomer '03E

Fellow students, I again ask for your support as a candidate for the Faculty Committee on Admissions and Financial Aid (FCAFA). FCAFA deals with pertinent, complex issues that touch the core of Amherst and it requires in-depth experience that I can deliver, having had two semesters of previous experience on the committee. As a student worker at the Admissions Office, I have gained an insider's grasp on its operations. I have also devoted an extraordinary amount of time to financial aid issues as a co-founder of Financial Aid & Class Equality (FACE). This year FCAFA has begun to tackle student concerns about financial aid and with your support I'd like to continue to bring all of our issues to the table.

Discipline

Mihailis Diamantis '04

The goals of a member of the Committee of Discipline are Prevention and Reform. The first calls for Severity to dissuade future transgressors. The second acts to temper the first in its call for Justice. The two opposing forces harmoniously discover a medium in which both are satisfied. They do not do this of their own accord, unfortunately. Here the assistance of a member of the Committee of Discipline is needed. I feel that if either Severity or Justice in regards to those who violate the College policies is lacking, the minus tends more towards the former. This I wish to correct.

Jake Kaufman '02

As a current member of the Committee on Discipline, I have cultivated a close familiarity with the Committees' procedures, protocols, functions and faculty members. Furthermore, as I explained last year to earn your vote, the issues addressed by the Committee are of deep importance to me; working within the system to promote academic honor on this campus is, I feel, one of the best uses that I can make of my time as a student at this school. Next year, as a senior, I feel that my perspective on disciplinary infractions would be informed, objective and, above all, fair.

Alexandra Linden '04

I would be proud to serve on the Committee on Discipline for the Amherst Student Government. Discipline is essential to maintaining standard codes of conduct and a source of order. Since we all must live together on such a small campus, I believe it is vital to enforce the rules so that there exists some sort of fundamental guidelines to abide by. When determining whether College policies have been violated, I feel that my moral judgment would greatly benefit the student body. My peers could probably tell you I am a very approachable person who makes every effort to achieve a common goal. As disciple always seems to be a key agenda on campus, I would not only make sure that it is maintained but would also make any necessary changes. So, please vote for me and I will make sure to best serve you, the Amherst student body.

Lincoln Mayer '04

As someone who believes strongly in the importance of intellectual honesty and personal integrity, I am confident that I would serve the student body well as a member of the Committee on Discipline. I promise to enter every proceeding unbiased and with an open mind. When the committee determines that College policies have been violated, I will carefully consider what disciplinary action would be commensurate with the infraction committed. Furthermore, because the committee deals with cases of a sensitive nature, I will maintain strict confidentiality regarding the cases themselves and the decisions the committee makes. Thank you for your consideration.

Educational Policy

Sam Charap '02

As someone who participated on the CEP this year, I can tell you that we have done a lot about the major issue facing the committee: honors at Amherst. We organized a special meeting of the Student Senate to get a sense of student views on the issue and submitted those views to the faculty. We even made sure that some of the faculty on the committee attended. But enough hasn't been done. There are still many on the faculty who want to return to an honors system that will only award thesis work, leaving many of our fellow hard-working students who chose not to do so out in the cold.

There are some who even support a system of honors attached to class rank, an idea I and those of you to whom I have talked find totally antithetical to everything that is great about academics at Amherst. Elect me to the CEP, and I promise to continue to represent student input on honors and all important issues that the committee faces, fighting to make sure that your voice is heard as the College makes these critical decisions.

Rocío Digón '03

The Committee on Educational Policy is dedicated to improving the academic environment at Amherst. Some of the challenges before us are the large number of omitted classes each semester, the lack of tenure track professors in several departments, the somewhat high number of courses that meet during the same times, and grade inflation and the honors system. If elected, I promise to work to make sure students find their academic niche here at Amherst; I will listen to your voices.

Elaine Ewing '04

Academics are central to life at Amherst. More than anything else, it is our academic excellence that makes our college shine. As a member of the Committee on Educational Policy, I will work hard to maintain and improve the quality of education at Amherst. I want to increase the role students have in designing the academic environment. I believe that greater student involvement in the design of new classes, professorships, and academic policies will further foster the sense of academic community that sets Amherst apart. I am energetic, assertive, and dedicated. I would be proud to serve our college in the SGO.

Daniel Geldon '04

This year, I had the opportunity to serve as a freshman senator at-large. Although this position, which carries no committee assignment, allowed for little overall responsibility, it taught me about important issues on campus and how we can best approach them as a student body. And, simply, it inspired me to do more. If elected to the Committee on Educational Policy, I will focus on how we can ensure continued course quality and increase offerings by adding full-time faculty positions. I will also explore an enhanced reading period and firmly represent student views on proposed changes to the honors system.

Jake Kaufman '02

As a rising senior intending to write a thesis and, probably, attend graduate school, I am deeply involved with academic policies and practices. I wish to serve on the CEP because I feel that intellectual and academic pursuits are prime aspects of any Amherst students' experiences here. I ask for your vote and promise that I am qualified for the position by my personal involvement with academic issues and my personal investment in the improvement of Amherst's educational and academic policies. Please feel free to contact me at x3089 with any questions or concerns.

Stacey Kennard '03

Amherst is known for its excellent academics, but we all know that many students struggle with gaps in curriculum and course access. As a member of the CEP, I would endorse the following proposals to ensure the continued growth of student-centered academics: Revise the scheduling policy so that departments will be required to offer courses of the same level during multiple time slots. Encourage intellectual, cultural and racial diversity in new faculty hires and push for a more diverse curriculum by supporting new courses likely to appeal to a broad range of students. Push for major programs in Environmental Studies and Latin American Studies. Above all, I promise to represent the academic needs of all students.

Joanne Wang '04

Stop.

And think.

The year's over. Have we learned anything? As I finish my first year, I emphatically answer yes. Yes, I've learned about myself, my relationships, my interests. But, I wonder if our #1 Liberal Arts education provides us with all it says it will.

I want to see more community-based classes. More diverse faculty. A number of classes offered each year in every department. General courses for freshman who prefer a core curriculum. After taking English 6 and tutoring with El Arco Iris, I understand the complexity of a good education. It's more than a few good books.

Honorary Degrees

Adam Mullinax '03

The dedicated few to whom we owe the constant improvement of our society are sadly underappreciated. As a member of the Honorary Degree Committee, I would be given the rare opportunity to represent you in remedying this problem. I pledge that I would use my nominating power not as a reward for the rich and privileged, but in order to recognize the unsung heroes who have successfully fulfilled our motto and illuminated the world with dedication and vision deserving of an honorary degree from our fair college.

Tom Fritzsche '03,

Mike Stevens '03

We are running as a co-candidate pair, as two students with one vote. "Dear rising juniors, No one has yet submitted declarations of candidacy for two junior-class positions on the Committee on Honorary Degrees. This committee, not surprisingly, makes decisions about awarding honorary degrees and has input about graduation speakers. Although you may not be thinking about it now, this two-year position has a key role in planning your not-too-distant graduation. Therefore, we're extending the deadline for the position until tomorrow." We would represent our class by supporting worthy candidates for degrees and by working to maintain an active student body.

David Bugge '03,

Shivang Shah '03

We, David Bugge and Shivang Shah, announce our co-candidacy for one position on the Committee on Honorary Degrees. Each of us is strongly dedicated to awarding honorary degrees to individuals in our community who most deserve it. We are also very strongly devoted to the best possible breakfast choices in Valentine. In our capacity as Student Senators, we will work hard to achieve the amelioration of what we believe to be one of the campus' most egregious failings-the absence of Cinnamon Toast Crunch in Valentine. It is a job that must be done, and we will do it!

Library

Ben Baum '03

I am running for reelection to the Library Committee because Frost is an incredible resource we have on campus that needs student support and constructive criticism. I want to represent Amherst students1 needs on the Library Committee.

With the College Democrats, I have taken on the responsibilities of running meetings and cooperating with both students and faculty. We can work to improve library hours, enhance our facilities, and offer better access to reserve materials. As a member of the Library Committee, I will be open for comments and an active member of the SGO.

Alexander Ulianov '03E

My name is Alex Ulianov and I am running for a position on the Library Committee. If elected I will try to have the library's collection of movies expanded to include more popular titles and more new releases. I would also like to increase the availability of reserve books that are required reading in an attempt to lessen the burden of expensive course books.

In addition I look forward to being an active member of the SGO and listening to people's individual concerns. Thank you in advance for your support.

Physical Education and Athletics:

Bradford Coffey '04

Athletics at Amherst have always brought a great sense of pride and tradition to our campus and has helped us become one of the elite liberal arts schools in the country. As a member of both the soccer and rugby teams, issues such as a lack of NESCAC representation at the NCAA tournaments and funding for club and intramural activities have all been brought to my attention. I hope to work with the school to remedy this situation and to continue the traditional and inspirational role athletics have provided the Amherst community.

Hallison Putnam '02

Having served one term on the Committee on Physical Education and Athletics I feel that I have a good opportunity to make continued contributions to the SGO in the upcoming year. My personal experiences with athletics range from daily usage of the fitness center to membership on varsity teams. Thus, I feel that I have means to communicate and combine the concerns of the Amherst student body with those of the administration. I would appreciate your support in the upcoming elections.

Priorities and Resources

Bob Razavi '03

I currently serve on the CPR, and seek reelection. I now have a sense of 1) what this committee does, and 2) the role that students play therein. Because this is a faculty committee, the student representatives serve their most important function as liaisons between the faculty and the Student Senate. Accordingly, I feel that an incumbent candidate is a better-prepared and more effective candidate. My committee experience includes a laptops-in-schools focus group sponsored by Microsoft and Toshiba (1997-98), and a treasurer position in student government. I served as full-time Event Coordinator of the city of Amherst's Earth Day last April, an elaborate task that included relevant accounting and budgetary duties. I have also held an editorship with The Student and chaired MassPIRG.

Security Advisory

Anne Warren '02

As a current member of the Security Advisory Committee, I look forward to serving on the committee for another year to continue with our ongoing goal of making the campus safer. I have taken student input about lighting and safety concerns to the committee, which is composed of students, faculty, and staff, and incorporated it into the discussions and lighting tours. In the upcoming year, I hope to again communicate student safety issues to the committee and ensure that they are amended.

Trustee Advisory

Alexandra Linden '04

I would be honored to serve on the Trustee Advisory Committee on Student Life for the Student Government. As a student who has many recommendations regarding academic, extracurricular, and social life, I feel that I could properly voice the concerns of the Amherst student body to the Board of Trustees. I am a good listener who would enjoy working with peers to achieve a common goal. While talking amongst the student body, I have acquired ideas for changes that should occur to enhance the overall campus. One such example includes housing, which seems to be the key agenda for Admissions and the Board of Trustees and a first-hand experience for students; I would make sure that students have input regarding dorm renovations such as in Pratt, James, and Stearns. I am a very approachable person who is always open to suggestions, so please vote for me, as I will make every effort to best serve you, the Amherst student body.
