Five cars vandalized in O'Connell lot
By Mike Reed, News Editor
Vandals broke into five cars parked in O'Connell lot, located across the street from the physical plant building, on Sunday night.

Officers notified Mike Pages '02, one of the students whose car suffered a break-in, on Monday morning. Zeeya Jamal '02 also had her car broken into.

Pages estimated that he would have to spend $100 to repair broken locks on his car. He also said that he did not notice if any items were missing, though he could not be certain.

"They tried to rip out my stereo. Fortunately, they weren't very bright, so they couldn't," said Pages. "Because they ripped my lock, I can't go anywhere with my car. I'm pretty annoyed."

Though officers patrol O'Connell lot, it is not monitored by security cameras. At present, the only parking lot on campus with a security camera is the Hills lot, which is located behind the physical plant building.

"The police do patrol, and they shouldn't have to be there for 24 hours a day," Pages said. "They should put in a camera so they don't have to waste their time and so there would be something to look at if anything happened."

Pages said that the camera should be used to monitor cars, not to check up on students.

Chief of Campus Police John Carter said that before he learned of Sunday's break-ins, he had not participated in any discussions concerning the installation of a security camera in the O'Connell lot.

"The conversations about it are happening now, though there haven't been any in the past," he said.

According to Carter, Campus police plan on speaking with UMass police and town police to find out if similar break-ins have occurred.

"We're only at the beginning of the investigation," said Carter.
