Two run-offs to be held in '05 elections
By Greta Bradlee, Staff Writer
Two sets of run-offs will be held following the results from last week's Student Government Organizations (SGO) elections. Christian Sanchez '05 and John Pourciau '05 will face-off for the position of freshman class president, and Melissa Ginsberg '05 and Niti Sardana '05 are in the run-off for freshman College Council representative.

If elected, Pourciau said he plans on having monthly meetings in each of the freshman dorms, to better understand which issues are important to the Class of 2005.

"Any one of the candidates would be easy to talk to," he said. "But, if I am not coming to you, I am not doing my job … I know people have to be sought out. They have to feel that they are important to the system. I believe I can make them feel that way."

Sanchez said he is most concerned with extending the hours in the library and the computer center. He also said he would like to see microwaves in the common rooms of the dorms, as well as more washers and dryers. This is especially important in Valentine Hall, he added, where the residents have to go next door to Moore Dormitory in order to do their laundry.

Ginsberg, who said she served on a similar committee in high school and has held many leadership positions, said that, as freshman Council representative, she would like to improve the computer assistance program.

"If you didn't buy your computer through the school, they won't help you," she said.

Ginsberg also said that she would like to establish some competition between the freshman dorms, whether it be in sports games or trivia.

"I am sure this will be a close election, and whoever wins will do a good job," she said.

Sardana also said that she has leadership experience and has already talked to many freshmen about which issues matter most to them.

"I know many of the freshmen on campus," she said. "So I feel that I can represent our class accurately and promptly take care of any concerns my fellow classmates might have."

Sardana added that she is interested in extending the hours of Valentine, having more attractive on-campus job opportunities, and getting more appliances in the freshman dorms.

She also said that she pledges to "put in the time, effort and dedication this job requires to make sure each and every student and faculty member is more content with how campus life is run."

Also in this election, Forogh Hakimzada '03 and Jay Gilliam '04 were selected to serve on the Trustee Advisory Committee on Student Life.

With 91 percent of the vote, Meredith Block '02 was elected to the Committee on Discipline.

Dave Babbott '05, Esther Lim '05 and David Scherr '05 were elected to fill the freshman class senator-at-large positions.
