Committee begins search for treasurer

The treasurer's search committee recently began reviewing applications for the position of treasurer of the College and will continue until the position is filled.

The position opened last spring when former Treasurer Sharon Siegel left to pursue other opportunities.

Since Siegel's departure, Peter Shea, the College's associate treasurer and budget director, has been serving as acting treasurer. Shea was nominated as a candidate for the position of treasurer.

The search committee, which is conducting a national search to fill the position, placed advertisements in various media outlets in an attempt to attract a wide range of applicants, according to committee Chair and Professor of Chemistry Mark Marshall. Marshall expressed his satisfaction with the response to the advertisements. "I certainly think we're getting a very good response, a very diverse response," he said.

The official position announcement, released by the treasurer's office, described the position of treasurer and the qualifications of a successful candidate.

"Overall, we're looking for somebody who understands the unique aspects of a quality liberal arts education," said Marshall. "The treasurer must be comfortable with managing large investments and also must be comfortable in an academic environment."

Marshall and Co-chair and Trustee Jide Zeitlin have started to review applications. After eliminating the weaker applications, the Co-chairs will present the remaining applications to the entire search committee. "So far, I've been impressed by the consistency between my evaluations of applications and those of the trustee co-chair,"said Marshall.

The search committee will review the applications and choose approximately four candidates to recommend to President Tom Gerety, who will then bring them to the Board of Trustees for evaluation.

"It would be great if we could make our recommendations by the end of the calendar year," said Marshall.

"I think Sept. 11 has made many people reassess their options," Marshall said. "The position of treasurer allows people to combine financial expertise with something a little more personal."
