At its meeting Monday night, the Student Government Organization (SGO) voted on interim appointments to three vacant positions.

The SGO appointed Matthew Moses '02 as SGO vice president and David Bugge '04E as sophomore class president. Drew Foster '02 was appointed as Student Finance Committee (SFC) films and lectures subcommittee chair, after a run-off election against Richard Lee '02.

Amy Summerville '02 recently resigned as SGO vice president, while Blake Sparrow '04 was recently elected to the position of SFC Chair. As a result, he vacated his positions as sophomore class president and SFC films and lectures subcommittee chair.

Students were invited to apply for these positions in a campus-wide email sent by the SGO last Tuesday. They were asked to submit a 100-word statement to the SGO by Saturday, March 5, explaining their qualifications and why they would like to be appointed to their requested position.

The SGO received a total of eight applications, according to SGO President Michelle Oliveros-Larsen '02.

Two students applied for the position of sophomore class president, two applied for the position of SGO vice president and four applied to be SFC films and lectures subcommittee chair.

"As a result of Amy's resignation, there is a hole in the SGO e-board. I think I can work to create a unified e-board and ensure a smooth transition into the coming administration-there has been a lot of division this year," said Moses, who also serves on the library advisory committee. "I have a working relationship with the members of the e-board and I feel passionate about the issues we are working on and I have the ability to lead the review and recognition process efficiently." As a senior, Moses will not be eligible to run for another position in April's elections.

Bugge, who currently serves on the advisory committee on honorary degrees, discussed why he was a particularly appropriate choice for sophomore class president.

"Being on the Senate and knowing Blake [who recently resigned], I felt I had the qualifications to serve," said Bugge. "As president, I'll have more responsibility."

Bugge will be responsible for organizing a sophomore class project. "I've got some ideas," he said regarding the project. Bugge has not yet decided if he will run for a position in April.

Foster expressed excitement about contributing to the SGO in his last semester as a student.

"I've always had an interest in being part of the SGO, but so far I haven't had the opportunity," said Foster. "When I heard about the opening, it seemed appealing. I want to get a feel for what it's like to the in the SGO and a feel for how the SFC is run."

According to Foster, he will be in charge of allocating discretionary funds, signing checks for films and lectures and reallocating funds. "When budgets are submitted, the SFC allocates money to specific budgetary requests," said Foster. "If a club wants to move money allocated to, for example, a speech to another part of its budget, it needs to be approved. I will oversee this process."

Moses, Bugge and Foster will fill the positions until the SGO elections in mid-April. "Appointment to a position is not for next year; it is only for the six weeks," stated the email sent by the SGO explaining the application process.

"Responsibilities [of the SGO vice president] for the remainder of the semester include, but are not limited to, setting the agenda for the Review and Recognition Board," stated the email, which also described some of the responsibilities the SFC films and lectures subcommittee chair will face.

"Responsibilities [of the SFC films and lectures subcommittee chair] for the remainder of the semester include, but are not limited to, signing check requests, reviewing reallocations and voting on discretionary fund requests," stated the email.
