"This year, there were three vacancies on the Committee of Six," said Dean of the Faculty Lisa Raskin. "There were 83 names on the first ballot, 12 names on the second ballot and six names on the third ballot. Three new members were elected."
Brandes, Clark and Rabinowitz will be taking the places of Professor of Mathematics Gregory Call, Professor of English and Black Studies Rhonda Cobham-Sander and Professor of Classics and WAGS Frederick Griffiths, all of whom are stepping down after completing their two-year terms.
Professor of Physics Kannan Jagannathan, Professor of Economics Walter Nicholson and Professor of History John Servos will continue their terms during the 2002-03 school year.
The Executive Committee of the Faculty, more commonly known as the Committee of Six, is composed of six faculty members, as well as the president of the College and the dean of the faculty who serve as the chair and secretary of the Committee, respectively. The president and dean are non-voting members of the Committee.
The Committee of Six makes decisions regarding tenure and reappointments, nominating colleagues to other College committees and granting sabbatical fellowships. The Committee of Six's main purpose during their weekly meetings, however, is putting items on the agenda for faculty meetings.
"It's probably not going to be terribly different from the other two terms that I served, but it will be very efficient to have experienced people and I think that we will work very well together," said Brandes. "This is a very important job and I am very honored to have been directly elected by my colleagues."
