College suspends Kloepfer

The College recently suspended John Kloepfer '04 after a hearing regarding an assault and battery complaint against him. In December, a student filed the complaint against Kloepfer with the Dean of Students' Office.

Kloepfer's guilty verdict by the disciplinary committee casts new light on his testimony before the same committee in the hearing of Brett Farson '03, in which Kloepfer claimed that he had never been involved in a fight or hit anybody during his time at the College. Kloepfer and one other student filed complaints against Farson following a Nov. 9 altercation after which the two had to go to UMass Health Services.

Farson was suspended for one year as a result of these allegations.

Due to Farson's accusation that Kloepfer committed perjury, an accusation now supported by Kloepfer's suspension, Farson appealed his own suspension to the College and then to the Hampshire County District Court in January. Both President Tom Gerety and the District Judge upheld it.

Farson believes that Kloepfer's suspension should affect decisions regarding his own situation. "I think that an accused student has the right that the plaintiff must tell the truth. Dean [of Students Ben] Lieber and President [Tom ]Gerety don't think so," he said.

Kloepfer was unavailable for comment. He will be re-admitted to the College after one year without having to go through the re-application process.
