Colby community mourns death of senior found dead near her dorm:Dawn Rossignol, a Colby College senior, was found dead last Tuesday, Sept. 16, near the campus in what police have labeled a homicide, according to the Bangor Daily News. Rossignol was found approximately 300 feet away from her car. The Maine State Police believe Rossignol walked to her car at about 7:20 a.m. on Tuesday morning and was abducted and killed sometime between then and 9 a.m., when a police officer spotted her car. Rossignol was on her way to meet her mother in Bangor, where she had a doctor's appointment, according to the Bangor News. Her parents reported her missing when she failed to arrive.

"We have been conducting further searches of the area-the area where Dawn was found, also where her vehicle was located ... We're committed to following every lead to its final end, determining whether or not it's involved and acting upon it appropriately," said Maine State Police Lt. Tim Doyle, according to The Colby Echo, the Colby College student newspaper.

The Colby campus was shocked when news of the incident became public. The Student Government Association sent out a campus-wide email requesting student submissions about the incident to The Echo. Colby administrators, Rossignol's friends and other students expressed their feelings of mourning. "I did not know Dawn Rossignol. But any death is a devastating loss. I would like her family and friends to know that all of Colby will provide support. I myself am struck by this event," Roy Wilson '07 wrote.

Lindsay Lanier and Matt Ritter, both senior class representatives, wrote, "Without a doubt the death of Dawn Rossignol, one of our classmates, is a sobering reminder of how fragile our lives atop Mayflower Hill and outside of it can be … We appreciate all the support that our classmates have shown both to each other and to the family and friends of Dawn ... All we can hope is that through this tragedy we are made stronger as a class and as a community. We cannot express in words how deeply sorry we are to Dawn and all those with whom she was close for such an inexplicable loss."

Their campus held a quiet memorial service on Monday, Sept. 22 at 11:00 am, while her funeral was held at St. Agatha Roman Catholic Church in St. Agatha, Maine.

The case is still in its early stages of investigation and the Colby campus security has cautioned students about safety, according to The Echo.

Yale workers end four-week strike, agree to new contract: Workers at Yale University who had been on strike since the beginning of the semester agreed to a new contract on Friday and have resumed work, according to The Chronicle of Higher Education. The eight-year contracts provide annual wage increases of three to five percent and nearly double the amount of employees' pension benefits.

The strike ends disruption on the Yale campus and in New Haven, Conn., where a protest closed down the center of the city a week ago for four hours, according to The Chronicle. The 12 dining halls that serve upperclassmen on the Yale campus have reopened, and classes have resumed in their normal meeting places.

The new pay rates are effective immediately and are retroactive to January 2002, when the old contract expired. According to The Chronicle, as part of the agreement, employees will only receive two thirds of the additional pay for the retroactive period of time.

Union leaders were especially pleased that the contract creates a fifth pay grade for clerical employees who learn more advanced computer skills, according to The Chronicle.
