AAS election statements
By AAS Candidates
Tomorrow, the AAS will hold an election to fill positions on the judiciary council, the executive board and the senate. Candidate statements are listed by position.

Judiciary Council Chair

Ali Hassan '05

I want to join the AAS because I want to take the AAS back to the principles of its founding constitution. It is only by examining the constitution through the eyes of the founders and the immutable law they set down that we can set the AAS back to a government based on consent of the students. Such a government is the only admissible government by natural law.

Ryan Smith '07

I am Ryan Smith and I have decided to run for the position of judiciary council chair. My qualifications include student government treasurer, Youth Action International treasurer and a lengthy public speaking resume, all of which will help me perform my duties superbly. I don't want to just offer a list of achievements; I want to offer commitment, understanding and fairness through the position. As someone who is involved in the social aspect of Amherst, I could understand circumstances better and make decisions that can better all student life. Cast your vote for someone who won't cast you out.

Secretary

Di Shui '06

I don't have any boastful campaign promises for you. All I have to say is that I care about this campus and about our community. As executive board secretary of the Asian Students Association, I have interacted with the AAS, albeit on a limited basis. But where I lack experience, I have enthusiasm and sheer determination. Vote for me and I'll make you proud.

Class of 2006 Senator

Stephen Scriber '06

I want to be a senator for the class of 2006 because I want to do my part to change the image of incompetence and arrogance that is associated with the AAS. I am running because people like me don't feel represented and aren't being heard. If elected, I will remind my fellow senators that they are not above repute. I will encourage openness and increased student participation. I want the AAS to inspire something more than apathy at best and antagonism at worst. I am an honest voice of change and I am going to be heard.

Hey, my name is Techo Kim and I'm running for sophomore class senate. I was a senator last year and I hope to continue representing the sophomore class this year. One goal I have for this year is to make the senators more visible because I feel that many students don't know who their senators are and feel that their concerns are being left unaddressed. If you elect me, you can be confident that you can come to me with any of your concerns and I'll do whatever it takes to get the job done. Thanks for reading. P-out.

Class of 2005 Senator

Arpan Podduturi '05

I have never participated in student government, but I look at my inexperience as an asset, a Mr. Podduturi-Goes-to-Washington type optimism that would do our senate good. I'm a deserving candidate for a senate position because I can make objective, unbiased decisions on engaging issues. I'll work to provide alternatives to our current meal plans and I'd try to augment the Amherst student's social options. That said, I'm not Zack Morris. I might not be able to turn Schwemm's into The Max, or get everybody a summer job at Malibu Sands or guarantee a victory over Valley next year, but I can honestly say that I'll try.
