Y, Z dorms named Wieland, King

On Tuesday night, Dean of Students Ben Lieber announced the official names for the two new dorms, formerly referred to as "Y" and "Z."

"We've been in conversation with the donors for some time," Chief Advancement Officer Michael Kiefer said. "It was all finally settled in March and the names were announced last night at Lip Sync".

Z dorm is now officially named King Hall, in honor of Stanley King, class of 1903, who was President of the College from 1932-1946.

Y dorm's official name is Wieland Hall, after John F. Wieland '58.

Wieland is a real estate developer and philanthropist from Atlanta, Ga., who wished to improve the quality of housing with his donation. "The campus was housing deficient for all the fine students," said Wieland. "I am thrilled to do it, it is one of those things I have always thought about. It is a real personal thrill. I am looking forward to seeing [the building]."

An anonymous donor subsidized King Hall and requested that the dorm be named after King, according to a College press release.

The buildings cost a total of $17 million. They will house a total of 115 students, with each floor housing a maximum of 15 students in single-occupancy rooms.

According to Kiefer, residents who reside in the dorm next fall will receive a memento to mark the occasion.

The new dorms were built as part of the College's plan to renovate and improve the housing on-campus. As part of the Residential Master Plan, all first-year students will ultimately live on the Freshman Quad.
