Asian Night Market Spices Up Keefe
By Jonathan Thrope, Managing News Editor
With paper lanterns hanging high and sweet aromas filling the air, Keefe Campus Center was transformed into an Asian Night Market Saturday night for an evening of performances, food, carnival games and arts-and-crafts. The night strove to mimic the famous night markets of Hong Kong, Taiwan and other Asian cities, and though it was forced inside due to precarious weather, it still drew throngs of students.

“Considering we had to cut costs as much as possible and improvise with the indoor location, the event came together amazingly and I’ve gotten very positive feedback,” said co-Chair of ASA Lucy Zhou ’10. “Roughly a quarter of the student body showed up, and that’s something not very many Amherst events can boast.”

Upstairs in the Friedmann Room, there was a constant flow of performers including Isshin Taiko, a Japanese-style drumming group whose members include Dean Bekki Lee, as well as a dramatic escape from a straight-jacket by magician Felice Ling ’10. Throughout the Campus Center, students could participate in an assortment of carnival games such “chopstick challenge” or “pin the tail on the tiger.”

The event raised $1,389.10, double last year’s amount, to go towards American Assistance for Cambodia.
