This stint will be a trial run for the café, which will last until fall semester, to gauge student interest and the café’s efficiency, according to AAS Senator Chris Anderson ’12, who developed the idea for the café.
“The Lord Jeff Cafe team and I are very excited about opening this Friday and we hope the college community is too,” he said. “I do want to be clear that this is a trial run for the café — if we are successful, we will begin offering custom-made smoothies and other prepared items in 2011. We look forward to seeing you down there!”
The café will stay true to its student-initiative roots by being entirely staffed by students.
“We received over 90 applications for 16 spots, so the process was very competitive,” said Anderson. “Students were chosen based upon personality fit, work experience, financial need and background. Most people who applied were qualified, but we tried to get a diverse group of students (different class years, activities, etc.). This is a completely student-run project; there are no staff employees.”
Anderson hopes students, staff and faculty alike will use the café, and cross-country and track runner Laura Zaccagnino ’12 thinks that it will fill a different niche on campus than Schwemm’s or Valentine.
“It’s convenient because the gym is very far from Val so if you’re missing dinner, you can grab something. Most of the time I make it to Val on time, but for some people it’d be good if you want something not just out of the vending machines.”
