Letter to the Editor: College will lose a valued employee in Michael Kiefer
I was saddened to learn of the imminent parting of [Chief Advancement Officer] Michael Kiefer from Amherst College. Amherst has many faithful servants, but I know of none more charitable than Kiefer. Though his primary responsibility is to grow the College's financial resources, a task he has succeeded at brilliantly, Kiefer's openness to students is particularly commendable. Your article did a nice job of highlighting his affable, approachable disposition.
It is unfortunate that more students have not had the opportunity to know Michael Kiefer. Those of us who did spend time with him know that his optimism and encouragement are infectious, an important foil to the cynicism that can pollute the College. Kiefer is an important man who still finds time to work with, mentor and even befriend students. Amherst will be a poorer institution for his departure.
I know I speak for many in wishing Kiefer and his family blessings and grace in their new adventures.
