The front-page piece "Let the Games Begin" in the Sept. 12 issue of The Amherst Student about the new Game Room in Keefe Campus Center was an interesting article about the new home of the Game Room. However, it omitted the information that the new Game Room is located in the McCaffrey Room, named in memory of Michael J. McCaffrey, Class of 1983, who died in a plane crash in September of 1985. As an Amherst student, Mike was co-president of the Student Assembly, an RC and host of "Midnite Sports" on WAMH. He majored in political science and English.

In his memory, Mike's many friends and family members established an endowed scholarship fund in his name, income from which provides student financial aid each year. In addition, the McCaffrey family wanted to name a room in the Campus Center so that Mike's memory would remain at the center of student life. The family's generous gifts were used to support both the permanent scholarship fund and to carve out this space in the Campus Center.

The McCaffrey Room is still a central part of student life at Amherst. The plaque in Mike's memory is displayed in the Room, and I hope today's students will take a minute to reflect on this family's gifts to the College that continue to benefit students in Mike's name.
