The Amherst women's cross-country team secured their first overall victory of the season at the Codfish Bowl Invitational in Franklin Park, Massachusetts.

The Jeffs placed five women in the top 15, as well as six runners in the top 20 overall, led by Diana Rancourt '02, who finished third overall in a time of 18 minutes and 46 seconds.

First-year standout Aly Venti crossed the line second on the team and eighth overall in a time of 19:23. Molly Burnett '02 ran her best race of the young season, finishing third on the team and 10th overall.

"I think the team is beginning to come together," said Burnett. "[The team] is more accustomed to the workouts and races, and we are running with more confidence."

Solid performances by Alison Dimon '03 (19:42, 13th) and Rebecca Woo '02 (19:43, 15th) helped the women take their first team victory since last year's Little III meet.

The Jeffs have a deep team this year and they received top quality performances from many runners, even while some of their stars remained on the sidelines with injuries.

Emily Lobsenz '02 and Katie Scangos '02 were unable to compete at the Codfish Bowl, but their returns are eagerly awaited by the team.

"With the additions of Emily and Katie, the team will be defeinitely be stronger than ever," said Burnett.

The men's team finished eighth overall in the same meet, behind eventual winner Tufts University.

Nathaniel Robinson '02 led the Jeffs, completing the course in 26:32 and finishing 20th overall. Alex Lenkoski '03 and John

Stanton-Geddes '04 ran well to

finish in 56th and 44th place respectively.

Rusty Ryan '02 continued his streak of fine races, finishing fourth on the team and 64th overall in a time of 27:40. Justin DiVenuta '04 rounded out the top five and finished in 27:46, which was good for 66th overall.

Other strong performances came from junior Albert Lee (70th, 27:51), Andy Schneider '04 (94th, 28:17) and sophomore Carson Taylor (82nd, 27:57).

The men and women return to the Boston area next weekend when they will compete in the Tufts Invitational, which will be held in Grafton, MA.

The women will look to keep up the momentum they have made with two second place finishes and a win in their first three meets.

The men will continue to train hard in order to get back to the impeccable form that gave them a third place finish in the season opening Amherst Invitational.
