As another season begins, the Amherst men's tennis team has once again proved that it means business.

Traveling to Vassar College for the ECAC Division Tournament, the men took first place in a dominating fashion-winning three of the five singles flights and advancing to the finals in the other two.

"With our depth, we are definitely going to be a tough team to beat this year," said Brian Wexler '02.

Wexler captured the number one singles flight, an impressive feat with top contenders such as New York University and Manhattan College in the draw.

Brian Chin '03 and Rob Feeley '03 were the other flight champions, taking the number two and five singles flights, respectively.

Adam Leibsohn '03 and Dave Wellner '02, who were playing out of place due to the absence of Captain Reeve Segal '01, both advanced to the finals of the third and fourth flights.

"Although I usually don't play three, it was a good experience and gave me some good competition," said Leibsohn.

Representing Amherst in the doubles flight were Pete Ransmeier '02 and Andy Tsai '03. Their impressive play got them to the semifinals of the tournament.

Included in this run was a spectacular win against Middlebury College's number one doubles team of Hulce/Rymzo, who are doubles veterans.

This match was named the "highlight match" of the weekend by Coach Peter Robson.

In the overall point count the Jeffs prevailed with 25.0 points, edging out perennial tennis powerhouse NYU, which placed second with 22.0 points. Brandeis University, Sacred Heart University and Manhattan, last year's champions, finished in third, fourth and fifth places, respectively.

This is the first time in over four years that the Jeffs have come home with the ECAC title. "The competition was extremely tough, and it was encouraging to see the team rally together for the win. This sets a great tone for the rest of the year," said Wexler.

"Everyone played with purpose," said Coach Robson.

Next weekend, the men will compete individually in the Rolex Tournament at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

After the Rolex Tournament the Jeffs will have their final match of the season next Tuesday, when they host Brandeis.
