Men's Soccer Beats Tufts, M.I.T., But Falls To Bowdoin; Middlebury Next

Last Wednesday, the visiting men's soccer team beat NESCAC rival Tufts University with a 2-0 shutout. Both goals in the away game were made by Dave Michener '02, one in each half. This win gave Amherst a record of 3-1 in conference play and 4-1-1 overall.

Michener scored the first goal on a corner kick 40 minutes into the game for his third goal of the season. Midfielder Vivian Johnson '04 passed to Michener, who converted a shot inside the right post in the 65th minute. Goalkeeper Bill Orum '02 had eight saves, for his fourth shutout. There were 17 shots made on goal by Amherst and 15 made by the Jumbos. Amherst had seven corner kicks, one of which turned into a goal, to Tufts' two.

Although they were shut out, Tufts put up a good fight. "They were a solid team, the best we've played so far in the season," said Michener. "They hustled defensively, and at times were beating us to the 50-50 balls, but the score was fairly indicative of overall play."

"We have to work on our brief defensive lapses and be more consistent," said Co-captain Judson Coplan '01. On Saturday, the Jeffs took the trip to Maine, but lost to Bowdoin College 2-1. Bowdoin scored in the first half, and despite a Jeff retaliation, the Polar Bears came back to win the game. The only point from the Jeffs came from Piercarlo Valdesolo '03. "We hit three posts and had a lot more opportunities than they did," said Jeff Cantwell '04.

Junior back Ryan Goodband played very aggressively, as did his classmate Casey Ryan. The offense also had a good game. "In the last 20 minutes we had the ball constantly. It was one of our best games offensively. Unfortunately, we couldn't score," said Coplan.

On Oct. 3, Amherst had a strong shutout against visiting M.I.T. with a score of 5-0. With goals from Frank Perry '04, who posted his first career shutout, Vivian Johnson '04, and Andrew Korytoski '04, the Jeffs improved to 5-2-1. On Saturday, the squad will travel to face the Middlebury College Panthers and on Wednesday they will head east to Wheaton College for an afternoon contest.
