In a much hyped showdown, the Jeffs fell to top ranked Williams College, 2-1.

The first goal was scored by Williams junior Josef Powell in the second minute. Powell took a pass from Michael Cortese '01 inside the 18 and shot it past Bill Orum '02. Williams dominated offensively in the first half, attempting 13 shots on the Amherst goal.

Ryan Goodband '02 led the Amherst defense in shutting down the Ephs for the remainder of the first half. The other Williams goal was added in the second half when sophomore Dylan Smith fed it to Cortes, who put it past Orum with a half-volley.

NESCAC's leading scorer, sophomore Alex Blake of Williams, had 11 shots in the day but was unable to convert any of them. The two goals scored by the Ephs were their lowest total this season.

After the second goal, Amherst retaliated with a shot by Pat Garvey '03, assisted by Franklin Perry '04. The Williams defense turned back any further Amherst attacks.

With this win, Williams improved to 11-0, with a conference record of 7-0. Amherst fell to 5-4-2, and 3-4 in NESCAC play. Amherst will play its next game Saturday October 7 against Wesleyan University.

The first goal was made 28 minutes into the game by Pat Saunders of Middlebury. After both teams shuffled the ball back and forth for the first 25 minutes, Conor Shapiro crossed a ball to Saunders, who shot the ball past Amherst goalie Orum to make the score 1-0.

Middlebury scored again 10 minutes later off a free kick by Sergey Cherednichenko just outside the 18. He knocked it in between Orum and the crossbar to extend the Panthers' lead to 2-0.

In the second half, Amherst rallied behind striker Dave Michener '02 and midfielder Perry, but they were unable to score. Each goalie had five saves in the game.

Middlebury player Kyle Dezotell finished the scoring 21 minutes after halftime. Saunders took a shot off the post and Dezotell collected the rebound and scored his fifth goal of the season.

Although Amherst put in a strong effort, Middlebury played their best game of the season. "They were pumped about the game. They came out and were a lot more intense than we were," said Tim Canon '04. After this game, the Jeffs have a record of 5-3-1 overall and 3-3 in conference play, while the Panthers improved to 5-1-2 and 3-1-1 in the NESCAC.
