Women's Golf Trounces Williams In First Ever Dual-Match Meeting
By by JOE KATUSKA, Sports Editor
Who would have thought that 141 years into the heated rivalry between Amherst and Williams College, a first would occur.

In what is believed to be the first ever dual-match meeting between the two women's golf teams, the Lord Jeffs took a commanding 355-371 win over the Ephs.

The match took place at Taconic Country Club in Williamstown, one of the top ranked courses in the Northeast. The Jeffs were paced by freshman sensation Kathryn Kuchefski, who shot an 84 on the 5,202 yard course.

Williams' Katie Nicoll had the best round of the day with an 81, but the other members of the Ephs' team were unable to follow suit. Amanda Robinson posted an 86 for Williams, Kristin Engelbrecht-Bleem shot a 96 and Lisa Stern closed with a 108.

While the Jeffs were unable to take home medalist honors, they were much more consistent than the Williams team. The official format for dual-matches dictates that only the top four scores count towards the team total, and the Jeffs had all four counting scores under 95.

Captain Jaime Ratner '02 placed second on the Jeffs with an 86, Jeannie Limpert '03 finished with a 91 and Katie Gravel '03 rounded out the scoring with a 94.

The team is pleased with their progress this season and look forward to improving further. "We have played well this fall," said Gravel. "We have a very young program and we have a lot of room to grow."

The Williams match closed out a successful fall season for the Jeffs. Kuchefski led the team in all four events they entered.

The Jeffs fielded a young team in the fall and with the experience they've gained it appears that good things lie ahead. None of the five members of the current team are seniors, so for the near future the Jeffs lineup will be set.

"We should be much better in the spring," said Gravel. "We have a rigorous training program throughout the winter, so I am very optimistic about our chances."
