Purple, white and red uniforms added to the fall foliage colors this weekend when Amherst hosted the Little III championships, the first of two championship meets. Williams took both the men's and women's title, followed by Amherst and Wesleyan.

The Williams men won the Little III title by taking the first six spots in the men's race. Tim Campbell and Dusty Lopez, both seniors at Williams, finished the five mile course hand-in-hand in a victorious time of 27:30.

The Jeffs edged Wesleyan 58 to 62 for second place. Nathaniel Robinson '02 was the highest Jeffs' finisher, crossing the line in 28:22 to take ninth place. First-years Michael Page, John Stanton-Geddes, and Justin DiVenuta finished within 15 seconds of each other to take 10th, 11th, and 15th place respectively. Alex Lenkoski '03 rounded out the top five in a time of 29:03, good for 20th place.

The men also had strong races from juniors Ben Kozyak (26th, 29:45), Rusty Ryan (37th, 30:50) and Albert Lee (38th, 30:50), sophomores Carson Taylor (27th, 29:45) and Brett Richey (30th, 30:11), and first-year Andy Schneider (34th, 30:41). Jacob Cooper '02 made his fall racing debut by finishing 42nd in 32:12.

The women also took second on the strength of their upperclassmen. Katie Scangos '02 was the top Amherst finisher (fourth, 19:54) after competing in only her second race of the fall. Co-captain Katie Famous '01 took second on the team and sixth overall in 20:07. Emily Lobsenz '02 ran through back pain to place seventh in 20:09, while Molly Burnett '02 crossed the line in 10th place at 20:19.

Alison Dimon '03 continues to race consistently, finishing fifth on the team and 15th overall in 20:44.

Cecily Brewer '02 ran arguably the best race of her collegiate career, finishing eighth on the team and 22nd overall. Her time of 21:01 was nearly two minutes faster than her time on the same course in early September.

"I think we were really able to use our home course to our advantage," said Brewer. "It's a tough course but we've been training on it all season and we were able to use that experience to run with confidence."

The women received notable performances from juniors Rebecca Woo (23rd, 21:02) and Julie Lipez (47th, 23:05), sophomores Emily Dubinsky (31st, 21:25) and Jamie Newman (34th, 21:37), and first-years Erinn White (17th, 20:52), Aparna Nancherla (24th, 21:07), Anne McNamara (41st, 22:19), Helen Dole (42nd, 22:30), Denise Drohobyczer (43rd, 22:35) and Alyson Venti (45th, 22:46).

"I thought both teams raced well and took advantage of a beautiful day," said Coach Erik Nedeau. "While certain [women] are overcoming injuries, other runners have really stepped it up in practice and their effort is paying off on raceday. I think both teams are well-prepared to enter the championship season."

Players with injuries include Diana Rancourt '02, who suffered a stress fracture and is expected to miss the next two meets. Emily Lobsenz '02 continues to race despite pain from breaking a bone in her back last spring.

Both teams will compete in the NESCAC Conference Championships next Saturday, the last home meet of the year.

The women are scheduled to start at noon, while the men should kick off around one.
