Men's Swimming Opens With Win Streak

The men's swimming and diving team defeated Union College and Trinity University (TX) two weekends ago by scores of 136-93 and 123-73, respectively. Coach Nick Nichols was pleasantly surprised with the meet against Union. "The people we expect to win events won," he said. "And the people we expected to be in third, fourth or fifth really stepped it up."

Nichols said he was impressed with several performances, including those of Myles Ranier '01 and Steven Shapiro '04 in the 1,000-yard freestyle. The two took first and second respectively. Nichols pointed to another first-second sweep-this time in the 200-yard individual medley-by Rob Winograd '02 and Mike Pohorylo '04 . Winograd also took first in the 100-yard backstroke, and he was followed by Russell Lang '03. Shapiro and Dan Morash '04 took the top two slots in the 500-yard freestyle.

Pohorylo also won the 100-yard breaststroke. "[Pohorylo] has a beautiful breaststroke to watch," Nichols said.

"It's nice to be going as fast as we're going this early in the season," he continued. The Jeffs took first in all individual events at Union except the 100- and 200-yard freestyles. Pat Kennedy '03 won the 50-yard freestyle. Chris Morton '02 and Jeff Sunderland '03 took first and second in the 100-yard butterfly. Ben Hopkins '03 took a double victory in the one-meter and three-meter diving competitions with point totals of 221.93 and 220.43, respectively. Morton, Kennedy, Pohorylo and Russell Lang '03 also captured first in the 200-yard medley relay. Four Amherst men captured double victories against Union, including Pohorylo, Morton, Winograd and Kennedy. "We looked really good across the board," Nichols said.

On Sunday, the Jeffs hosted Trinity. "On Sunday, we really raced well," Nichols added. Winograd took second in the 200-yard freestyle by six-hundredths of a second and first in the 200-yard butterfly by less than a second.

Winograd also anchored the men's 400-yard freestyle relay, touching out Trinity's foursome by one one-hundredth of a second. Kennedy, Read Porter '01 and Paul Tedeschi '01 swam the first three legs of the relay.

"For that freestyle relay to come down to one one-hundredth of a second was pretty amazing," said Nichols, who added he was impressed with Shapiro in the 500-yard freestyle. Shapiro was followed by Ranier and Grant Mandsager '04 for a sweep in the middle-distance event. Nichols also mentioned Pohorylo in the 200-yard breaststroke as another outstanding performer. "Pohorylo won by 11 seconds," Nichols said. "And he's only swum it a couple of times."

"Almost everybody had good swims Sunday," he added. Lang, Pohorylo, Morton and Mandsager joined to take first in the 200-yard medley relay. Porter captured two individual victories-in the 100-yard freestyle and 50-yard freestyle, where he was followed by Kennedy. Pohorylo and Morton took first and second in the 200-yard individual medley.

The Jeffs return to action against Middlebury College this weekend. Last year the Panthers came to Amherst and took the meet, and this year the Jeffs look to return the favor. Middlebury will be one of their most difficult oponents of the season.
